He was born in Blackshear, Georgia, son of the late Lazarus Darling Hickox and Rosa Beverly Hickox. He retired from the U. S. Army with twenty-two years of service, where he served during World War Two, Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He had been making his home in Waycross since 1970 and owned and operated the P & H Mobile Home Equipment Company. He was a member and Past President of the Waycross Lions Club, Commander of Post Ten American Legion, Past Commander of Post 4382 VFW, Past Commander District fourteen VFW, Seam Squirrel of MOC and a life member of the DAV. He is survived by his wife Barbara Nodine Hickox of Waycross; four sons Tommy Hickox of Birmingham, Ala., Larry Hickox of Jemison, Ala., Jody Hickox of Waycross and Curt Rowell of Albany, N.Y.; five daughters Kathy Lee, Denise Middleton, Colleen Clark, Teresa Rowell all of Waycross, Gail Mitchell of Antelope, Calif. a sister Alberta Tessner of Jacksonville, Fla.; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, aunts, uncles and other relatives. He is survived by three sons, Bobby Strickland (wife Judy) of Virginia Beach, Va., Wendell Strickland of Blackshear and Loren Strickland (wife Marianne) of Gainesville, Ga.; a sister, Mrs. Blanche Turner of Blackshear; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Carswell and Carolyn Strickland and Norris and Shirley Strickland, all of Blackshear, and Omer and Grace Strickland of Pinellas Park, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Robert L., Tracie, Tarver, Serge, Brian, and Kate Strickland, James and Lori Laird, Anna Raulerson, Kerry Hogan; nine great-grandchildren, Jessica Zaruba, J.R., Victoria and Brenna Laird, Preston Lemuel, Emily, Kelly and Sierra Strickland, Natalie Raulerson; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. She was a native of Pierce County but had resided most of her life in Waycross. She was married to the late Berrien Wyndell Henderson and was daughter of the late Fred Lee Dean and Maggie Blount Dean. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Gail Elizabeth Henderson who was the 1969 Charity Ball Queen of the Waycross YMCA; a sister, Evelyn Johnson; two brothers, Fred Earl Dean and Glenn L. Dean; and a special friend, Linda Sellers. Mrs. Henderson was a retired telephone operator with Southern Bell. She was a member of Brooks United Methodist Church, former sunday school teacher and had been a member of the Busy Bees. She was a member of the Cherokee Council Southeast Georgia Telephone Pioneers. She was selected to A Friend position to both the International Color Marketing Group in Alexandria, Virginia and the American Society of Interior Designers of Washington, DC and Atlanta. The survivors include a son, Jerry Wyndell Henderson of Waycross and Dalton; a sister, Maggie Lou Carver of Greenville, South Carolina; a brother, Bobby L. Dean of Pierce County; a sister-in-law, Doris Dean of Waycross; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the Music Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home Friday night from 7 until 9 o'clock. The Cherokee Council Southeast Georgia Telephone Pioneers are requested to meet at the funeral home Saturday at 1:40 p.m. to serve as honorary pallbears.
