Dennis Carter, 81, died Tuesday (October 2, 2001) at his residence following an extended illness. He was a native and lifelong resident of Ware County. He was son of the late Leon Cleveland Carter and Roxie Jordan Carter. Rev. Carter was former pastor of Morton Ave. Baptist Church, Lee's Chapel Baptist Church, Emerson Park Baptist Church and Jamestown Baptist Church. He was retired from the Seaboard Coastline Railroad. He served in the Army and was a member of the Jamestown Baptist Church and the Frank C. Folks Masonic Lodge # 192. The survivors include his wife, Lucile Lairsey Carter of Waycross; a daughter, Kay C. Boyett (husband Charles) of Waycross; a son, Jimmy C. Carter (wife Mary) of Brunswick; five grandchildren, Felicia Liles, Tina Martin, Sherrie Middleton, Cleve Carter and Chad Boyett; 10 grandchildren; four sisters, Hettie Edenfield and Ethelee Dryden both of Waycross, Vidalia Collis of Maryland, Martha Surrency of Jacksonville, Fla.; numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday in the Jamestown Baptist Church. Burial will be in Hephzibah Cemetery. He is a native of Charlton County, but has lived most of his life in Waycross. He is the retired owner of Gibson Oil Equipment Company. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of Central Baptist Church and the Fisherman Sunday School Class. He is the former chairman of the Usher Committee at the church. His parents were the late Noah Madison Gibson and Ruth Dean Gibson. He is also preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra Kaye Gibson, sister, Martha Cannon, and brother, Kenneth Gibson. He is survived by his wife, Janelle K. Gibson of Waycross; son, Horace Madison Gibson, Jr (wife Pam) of Waycross; brother, Fleming Gibson of Waycross; and two grandchildren, Jonathan Dean Gibson and Travis Atkins Gibson both of Waycross. She was a native and resident of Manor, but she has been residing in Blackshear for 23 years. She was employed by King Edward Cigar Factory for over 30 years. She was a member of Camp Branch Church of God of Prophecy, and she was a current member of Blackshear Church of God of Prophecy. She is the daughter of the late William Arthur Boyd and Sarah Ella White Boyd. Her husband is the late Jesse Mack Smith. She is also preceded in death by two brothers, Alvin and Oscar Boyd. She is survived by a daughter, Brenda Herrin (husband Dwight) of Blackshear; two sons, Michael Smith (wife Cathy) of Jacksonville, FL, and Travis Smith (wife Sally) of Valdosta; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren; two sisters, Edna Lambert of Jacksonville, FL, and Lottie James of Manor; and numerous nieces and nephews. A native and lifelong resident of Pierce County, he was employed with D&M International Sales & Salvage of Blackshear. He was a U.S. Air Force sergeant during the Vietnam War period. His parents were the late Johnnie Robert Day and Vera Harris Day. He was a member of Blackshear First Baptist Church and the MISFITS Sunday School Class. He was a past president of the Pierce County Saddle Club and of the Pierce County Jaycees ('75-'76). He was honored twice as Jaycee of the Year ('70 and '71). He was also a Farm Bureau member and an avid golfer and car racing fan. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for 70 years. She was also a member of the Charles Wesley Sunday School Class, the Circle #5, and the Women's Shrine Club. She was a native of the Philppines, grew up in Hawaii and had lived in Hinesville, Georgia for several years before moving to Jasper, Georgia two years ago. Born in Mermenteau, LA, Mrs. Pomeroy was the daughter of the late Erna Weber Weigel and Carl Herman Weigel. She graduated from Grady Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1928, and during World War II qualified as a Red Cross Nurse. She moved to Waycross in 1929 with her husband the late Dr. William Loomis Pomeroy. While in Waycross she was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, The King’s Daughters, Girl Scout Council, Okefenokee Regional Library Board, Service League, and the Ware Co. Medical Auxiliary. Mrs. Pomeroy is survived by one son, Dr. W.L. Pomeroy, Jr. of Waycross, two daughters, Mrs. Frank Richard Miller of Thomasville, GA, Mrs. Donald E. She was born in Coffee County Georgia daughter of the late Ira Clinton Fales and Martha Elizabeth Smith Fales and the widow of the late Floyd Mercer. She had lived most of her life in Waycross where she was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. She is survived by three sons Larry Mercer, Wayne Mercer and his wife Laura all of Waycross; David Mercer and his wife Vivian of Tifton, Ga.; two daughters Ruth Rollins of Waycross and Norma Jean Mathis and her husband Donnie of Jesup, Ga.; one sister Carol Gunter and her husband L. She was born in Pierce County and resided here most of her life. She had been a domestic worker, and in her younger days she had worked on farms, picking cotton and tobacco. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Her husband, Jasper "Jep" Eason, died in 1968. Her parents were William Bud and Olive Rowell Strickland. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Maude and Thomas Moseley, and a son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Beverly Eason, all of Blackshear, and eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several other relatives. Friday, October 19, 2001: MARY STRICKLAND EASON BLACKSHEAR--A funeral serivce for Mrs. Mary Strickland Eason, 90, was conducted Thursday afternoon at the Blackshear Church of God with the Rev. Franklin Peacock and the Rev. Clinton Kearney officiating. Burial was in the Patterson Cemetery. The pallbearers were Ken Strickland, Ron Strickland, Don Humphries, Jason Taylor, Ashley Corbitt and James Taylor. Pierce County Nursing Home employees were honorary pallbearers. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having been assigned to othe Wright-Patterson base at Dayton, Ohio and having held the rank of captain. He was a graduate of the Emory University Medical School, Class of 1961. He interned at the Louisville (Ky.) General Hospital and completed his residency in psychiatry at Emory. He received a fellowship for further studies in child psychology and he was also a graduate of the psychoanalytic school at Emory in Atlanta. He had a private practice in Atlanta and specialized in analysis and child psychiatry. He is survived by a daughter, Kim Owen, and a son and daughter-in-law, David and Brenda Owen, all in Atlanta. He operated Walkers Service Station for more than 25 years in Jacksonville before returning to Pierce County in 1970. After returning here he was engaged in farming and in operating Walkers Home Care. He served in the Army during World War II and was also a former member of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).
