The unfortunate young man was with four other boys, Lewis Francis, Will Cason, Harry Anderson and John Nicholls, had gone to the river on Wednesday for the purpose of fishing. They carried with them their blankets and slept on the bank of the river all night in order that they might get an early start at fishing Thursday morning. In the morning before commencing to fish all the boys took off their clothes and went in for a swim. After being in the water for some time three of the boys got into a boat and crossed over the river to look after some fish nets. After they had crossed over a short while Harry Anderson, who is a good swimmer, started to swim over to them. The boy who was drowned was not a very good swimmer, and the boys who were there supposed that he had attempted to swim across as Anderson had done, and in doing gave out and went down. About the time young Anderson had reached the boat the boys heard Parker calling for help but thought that he was just playing as he had been all morning. When he went down the second time, however, the boys thought there was something wrong and started to his rescue. Before they could reach him he had gone down for the last time, and, although they made several efforts at diving they were unable to find him. The place where the accident happened is exactly at the same point of the river where the Mock family were drowned about three years ago. After a diligent search lasting from 8 o'clock in the morning until 4 p.m. the body was found and brought to Waycross. The deceased was a son of Mr. J. J. Parker, who resides at Willacoochee, and a brother of Calvin W. Parker and Virgil Parker, both of this city. The funeral service took place from Trinity church this morning at 11 o'clock, Rev. Foster officiating. Mr. Calvin Parker is confined to his home on Gilmore Street with a severe attack of fever and was not able to attend the funeral. THE WAYCROSS JOURNAL Tuesday, June 30, 1903 Card of Thanks We desire to attend our heartiest thanks to those who were so kind as to aid us in the search for the body of our brother and to others who have ministered otherwise to us and our family in the hour of bereavement.
