C. MAY. 1941 IN MEMORY OF DEPARTED FRIENDS Mr. John O. Lewis The ranks of retired employees was invaded by Death on March 21st, when Mr. John O. Lewis, former conductor, Waycross District, passed away. Mr. Lewis entered the service of our company May 1, 1895, and capably performed duties entrusted to him for more than thirty-four years. He retired from active duty December 1, 1929. ATLANTIC COAST LINE NEWS WILLINGTON, N. C. MAY, 1941 IN MEMORY OF DEPARTED FRIENDS Mr. William D. Remington Again do we record the passing of a former employee, William D. Remington, retired engineer, Waycross District, who died April 1, 1841. Mr. Remington was employed by our Company September 28, 1888, serving continuously for nearly forty-three years. He retired from active duty April 1, 1931. ATLANTIC COAST LINE NEWS WILLINGTON, N. C. MAY, 1941 IN MEMORY OF DEPARTED FRIENDS Mr. Lee M. Stewart From our veteran’s ranks has gone another to join “That Innumerable Caravan”=== Mr. Lee M. Stewart, who departed this life April 19, 1941. Hundreds of friends throughout the System mourn his passing. Mr. Stewart was born in Athens, Alabama, October 31, 1872. He began his apprenticeship with the Illinois Central Railroad in 1889, subsequently working on that and other railroads as journeyman. He entered the employ of the Atlantic Coast Line as boilermaker at Sanford, Fla., April 1, 1904, later advanced to inspector, and was promoted to foreman to Waycross, Ga., in 1909, and was appointed General Boiler Inspector, System, in November, 1920. When he relinquished active work late in 1940, for purposes of retiring, he was foreman boilermaker at Waycross. ATLANTIC COAST LINE WILMINGTON, N. C. MAY, 1941 IN MEMORY OF DEPARTED FRIENDS Mr. Newton James Whitworth From “The Sanford (Fla.) Herald” it has been learned that Mr. Newton J. Whitworth, roundhouse foreman at Samford, died on April 16th, following a protracted illness. Mr. Whitworth was employed by our Company June 3, 1915, as machinist at Waycross, Ga., was promoted to roundhouse foreman in 1917, later advancing to General Foreman of Waycross Shops. He transferred to Sanford, Fla., in charge of the engine house there, on February 15, 1939.
