GA - OBIT: Stella Walker Salisbury Submitted by Barbara Walker Winge Stella Walker Salisbury Waycross Journal Herald Mrs. Salisbury Pastored Without Pay Says Chester Mrs. Stella Walker Salisbury pastored without pay declared the Rev. James Chester, pastor of the United Methodist Church at the funeral services for her at the age of 94 years. She was a native of Madison, Ga., and the daughter of the late Dr. T. J. Walker and Emma West Walker. Amazing Grace was one of the songs played and "In the Garden," both favorites of Mrs. Salisbury. She was Communion Steward for 50 years each Sunday preparing the elements carefully for this sacred service... She received the certificate of award and war service badge from the American Red Cross and was elected a Director of the Waycross Chapter. She received the Mother of the Year Award in 1953, the Morris Jacobson Brotherhood award being the first woman to receive it. She was Director of Welfare activities for the City of Waycross for over 30 years retiring in 1963. The Miller Medal of the Kiwanis Club was awarded her for outstanding service to the community in addition to other civic awards. She was the first honorary member chosen to Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority. In 1932 she formed the Sunshine Girls which were close to her heart... She was a faithful member of the King's Daughters and W.C.T.U... Survivors include a granddaughter, Mrs. Sally Sotwers, a stepdaughter, Mrs. Sarah S. Smith, both of Athens; a step granddaughter, Mrs. Sara Stella Woodward, Ashville, NC; two nieces, Mrs. Emma Walker Keenan, Waycross; Mrs. Rose Lowe, Columbia, SC; and a nephew, Sam Walker, Jr., Waycross. Active pallbears serving were William Sims, Grover E. Hatfield, Tommy Fesperman, James Stewart, Jack Williams, Jr., and Tom Gattis. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Administrative Board of First Methodist, King's Daughters, and W.C.T.U. Jimmy Stewart recalls that they gave their leftover Christmas candy to Mrs. Salisbury. She would call Christmas Eve to remind his father and he would take it over. She distributed it to joyful children on Christmas morning. Interment was in Oakland Cemetery with the Rev.
