She had lived most of her life in Waycross where she was a saleslady in the Ladies Department of Penny’s, retiring in 1989 with fourteen years of service. He was a native of Frankfort, Texas but had resided in Houston before joining the Air Force and had been in Waycross for the past year and a half. He was son of the late Edwin Lewis Thompson and Sophie Frances Mealzner Thompson. Mr. Thompson was a retired Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force and served as an fighter pilot and a test pilot in southeast Asia. The survivors include his wife, Betty Martin Thompson of Waycross; a son, William E. Thompson of San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Cynthia Ann Tyler of Mesquite, Texas; his step-mother, Christine H. Thompson of McGregor, Texas; two brothers, Edwin E. Thompson of Highland, Texas, F.M. He is a native of Scranton, PA, but he has lived in Waycross since 1956. He was a foreman with Standard Container when he was transferred to Waycross in 1956. He owned and operated Steve's Pine Room from 1959 to 1981. He was also a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. His parents were the late Stephen Bawkin and Mary Passek Bawkin. He was the husband of the late Gertrude Mary Novak Bawkin for 57 years. He was also preceded in death by a son, Stephen John Bawkin, Jr., three brothers, Joey, William and George Bawkin, and a sister, Marion Swift. He had been making his home in Waycross since 1982 where he was an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church, a member of the Men’s Bible Class, Thursday Morning Breakfast Club and the CSX Officers Club. He served with the U. S. Marines in World War Two and the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Ruth B. Henderson of Waycross, one son Ronald A. He was a native of Sydney, Montana but had resided in the Waycross area since the late 1960's. He was son of the late Tracy Lee Hendren and Yavonne Yvett Devierre Hendren. Mr. Hendren was a retired developer. He built the Wrigley Building in Chicago, worked on the Arch in St. Lois, built military bases throughout the United States and abroad, and put in early warning missile systems across the mid-west and Alaska. He served in the Army during World War II as a paratropper in the 101st air bourne. He jumped into Normandy and received the Bronze Star, Silver Star and the Purple Heart with Clusters. He was a member of the Elks Club in Billings, Montana. He received an engineering degree from U.C.L.A. and an structural degree from Dunwoody College. The survivors include his wife, Jetty C. FL native (Music Funeral Home, Waycross) Fred Junior Foster January 22, 1947 - September 30, 2001 Mr. Fred Junior Foster, 54, died Sunday (September 30, 2001) in Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center in Brunswick following a long illness. He was a native of Dade County, Fla. but had resided in Ware County most of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Hampton Foster and Frances Whitney Foster; his adopted parents, Jonas Foster and Lennie Sears Foster; three brothers, J. B. Foster, Robert Wayne Foster and Barney Franklin Brown; a sister, Gearlean Foster. He was a farmer. Mr. Foster served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War in 1967 and 1968. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, one Overseas Bar, Combat Infantryman Badge, Sharpshooter (Rifle M-14) and Sharpshooter (Rifle M-16). The survivors include his wife, Barbara Foster of Waycross; four sons, Richard Bassham (wife Diane), Buster Fred Foster (wife Cierra) and Joey Fussell all of Waycross, Ray Foster (wife Sandy) of Homerville; 10 grandchildren; three sisters, Christine Foster Courson (husband Lavell), Dorothy Foster Whitley (husband Frankie) and Leaffie Foster Thomas all of Millwood; a brother, Gerald Foster of Millwood; several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in the Telmore Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial will be in the Telmore Cemetery. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Waycross and a retired beautician. She was preceded in death by a sister Dorothy Cox. Flanders, 85, died Sunday morning (9-30-01) at the Gaines Park Assisted Living Community in Kennesaw, Georgia after an extended illness. She was a native of Alma, Georgia, daughter of the late Ben Bland and Thursie Stewart Bland. She had lived most of her life in Waycross and had been making her home in Kennesaw, Georgia for the past three and one half years. She was a member of the Central Baptist Church of Waycross for fifty eight years and she and her late husband John W. Flanders began the Flanders Photo Finisher and later established the Flanders Shopping Center where she operated the Flanders Spreads and Drapes. She is survived by one son Johnny L. Flanders and his wife Louise of Woodstock, Ga.; one daughter Janet "Jan" Broome and her husband James D. of Okeechobee, Fla.; three sisters Lora Lee Crews of Douglas, Ga., Effie Mae Crowley of Alma, Ga. and Thoris Youmans of Blackshear, Ga.; one brother Benny Hugh Bland of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren Dr. Jamie Flanders Wallace and her husband Kevin of Fayetteville, Ga., Jonathan D.
