Woody Dozier was born approximately 1775 in Lunenburg County, Virginia, to James Dozier and Mary Malone. He married Mary Chapman December 31, 1808, in Warren County, Georgia, the same year both his parents died there. Sometime between his marriage in 1808 and the year 1820, Woody and his family relocated to Jasper County, Georgia. The 1820 census tells us that besides Woody Dozier, there were 2 males under 10 years of age, 2 males between 10 to 16 years of age, and 2 males between the years of 18 and 26 years of age living in his household. Besides his wife there were 2 females under the age of 10 living with them. Since they had only been married 12 years, it cannot be determined from this record who the older males were. No previous marriage record has been located for Woody Dozier. The names of all his sons are not known. In 1826 Troup County, Georgia was formed. During the next few years, the inhabitants tried to decide on the county seat. Several of the residents wanted it to be the town of Vernon. One of the promoters for this was listed as Abner C. Dozier. By 1830 Woody Dozier was listed on the census for Troup County, Georgia. He was between 40 and 50 years of age as was his wife. They had living in their house hold 1 male under 5 years old, 1 male 5 to 10 years old, 1 male 10 to 15 years old, 1 male 20 to 30 years old, 1 male 30 to 40 years old, 1 female under 5 years of age, 1 female 5 to 10 years old, and 2 females 15 to 20 years old. Abner Chapman Dozier was most likely the male between 20 and 30 years of age. In 1832 Abner C. Dozier of Troup County, Georgia, by then 23 years old, drew in the Cherokee County Georgia Land Lottery. It appears that Woody Dozier died before the 1840 census was taken. It is not known if the elder Woody Dozier died in Troup County or if he came back to Jasper County before his death. Marriage records for Jasper County, Georgia, show that Abner C. Dozier married Adaline P. Freeman on 25 April 1839. The 1840 census records show that Abner and his wife were between the ages of 20 and 30 years of age, they had one female under 5 years of age, and a male between the age of 15 and 20 years living with them. The 1850 Jasper County Georgia Census is a little more revealing about the Dozier clan. Abner and his wife Adaline are there with their family, and they remain on the census records there through the early 1900s. Those records show their children to be: 1. George R. Dozier born 1843. 2. James Monroe Dozier born 1844. 3. Mary E. Dozier born 1848. 4. Woody B. Dozier born 1850. 5. Sarah J. Dozier born 1857. 6. Augustus Abner (or Abner Augustus) Dozier born April 20, 1859. Census records show that George R. Dozier was a Medical Doctor. He was married around 1865 to Permelia Indiana Scott Kelly who was born June 30, 1847. They had daughters Catherine L. “Katie” Dozier born about 1867 and “Addie” born about 1872 in Jasper County, Georgia. The family is listed on both the 1870 and 1880 Jasper County census records. George died sometime between 1880 and 1900 . In 1900 India Dozier was living with their daughter Addie and her family. Addie Dozier married James Davis Harvey about 1892 and subsequent census indicate they had daughters Carro born 1893, and Josy born 1895, as well as sons George born 1903, and Harold born 1907. Sometime between 1910 and 1920 James Davis Harvey died. After his death India Dozier remained with her daughter and family. Shortly before 1930 Carro Harvey married Howard Tress and they were living with her mother and grandmother on the 1930 census. India Dozier died June 16, 1931, and is buried in the Monticello Presbyterian Cemetery in Jasper County, Georgia. There is a picture of her tombstone at www.findagrave.com. The stone states that she was India S. Kelly and was the wife of G. R. Dozier, MD. No further Jasper County census records can be found on James Monroe Dozier, Mary E. Dozier, or Sara J. Dozier. On the 1880 census, son Woody B. Dozier is listed as a Dry Goods Merchant. He and his wife Sara M., born 1856, had children Lula born 1877 and Zady born 1879. Woody B. Dozier and family were not found again on the Jasper County Georgia census records. Son Augustus Abner Dozier or Abner Augustus Dozier, depending on which census you read, married Mary J. about 1884. They had the following children: 1. Mary Elizabeth Dozier born December 1, 1886. 2. Fredrick L. Dozier born February 1890. 3. John Wilmer/Wilbur Dozier born January 1896. 4. Hazel Dozier born 1901. Mary Elizabeth Dozier married Marcus H. Tyler about 1910 and they had son John D. Tyler in 1914. Marcus Tyler, born August 1886, can be found on the 1900 and 1910 Jasper County census records living with his Aunt Frances T. “Tener” Tyler. He was not shown on any census record with his parents. Frances Tyler was the daughter of Job Tyler and Mary Kinard who married in Jasper County, Georgia, October 7, 1841. They were the grandparents of Marcus H. Tyler. Job and Mary are listed in the Jasper County census records from 1840 through 1880. They had a large family of 14 children, 11 of them males. Marcus H. Tyler was not found on the 1920 census records, but on the 1930 Jasper County census he was shown as a widower with a 16 year old son. The record shows he was 24 when he married, which indicates he married in 1910. Son Fredrick L. Dozier can be seen on both the 1920 and 1930 Jasper County Census Records. He married Martha F., born 1894. They had children Mary J. Dozier born 1917, Wilmer A. Dozier born 1918, and Janet Dozier born 1922. Son John Wilmer/Wilber Dozier can be found on the 1930 Jasper County census with his wife Bessie, born 1899, and their 3 children John W. Dozier born 1923, Mary R. Dozier born 1925, and Edith E. Dozier born 1926. Nothing is known of daughter Hazel Dozier. Another note on Abner C. Dozier. Jasper Court of Ordinary, November Term 1860 - The Estate of James Pye Decd in a/c with Harmon W. Pye Admn. Dr for 1861 indicates that Abner C. Dozier was paid $6.75 from the estate. In August 2009, Craig Johnson of Jasper County, Georgia, came upon the Dozier Cemetery in the Oconee National Forrest near where Lane Road intersects Smith Mill Road and photographed and transcribed the tombstones of Abner C. Dozier, Adaline Dozier, A. A. Dozier, and Elizabeth Dozier. They read: In memory of Abner C Dozier Was born Feb 4,1809 And departed this life Nov 9 1876 Aged 69 years 9 months 6 days He died in full faith of meeting a better world than this and left a bright testamony behind for his bereved family.
