Brooking. CURTIS LOWE, ESQ., son and heir of Isaac Lowe, Jr., was born December 08, 1783 in Columbia County, Georgia. He married, before August 18, 1805 (as his first wife) ELIZABETH REBECCA BRODNAX, widow of Henry T. Brooking, probably in Columbia County, Georgia. The marriage is proven through the estate records of Henry T. Brooking. Henry T. Brooking died intestate. William Cowles was administrator of the estate 06 April 1802. On January 7, 1804 William Cowles, in a note to the Clerk of the Court of Columbia County, Georgia wrote, “I am informed that Mrs. Brooking, her Father, or Brother wishes to administer on the estate of the late Henry Brooking decd. If so, I will decline and give way to them, yours respectfully, Wm Cowles.” On 16 January 1804 ELIZABETH REBECCA BROOKING, Henry’s widow, became administratrix of his estate. In Columbia County, Georgia Inventory and Appraisal Book G, p. 30, is recorded the inventory of Henry T. Brooking, deceased 02 February 1804 totaling $4, 690.50 /s/ ELIZABETH R. BROOKING Administratrix. CURTIS LOWE became the administrator of the estate of Henry T. Brooking. An entry in Columbia County, Georgia Inferior Court Minutes for County Purposes, p. 316 dated August 18, 1805 reads, “Upon the special affidavit of Edward Broadnax [brother of Elizabeth Rebecca Brodnax Brooking] showing to this court what CURTIS LOW who is acting as an administrator in right of his wife on the estate of Henry Brooking decd and that it is made to appear to this court by the affidavit aforesaid that he has not pursued the letter of the law in the case and management of said estate, that he is about to take under advantage of the minors of said estate. This court now possessing the superintending case of minors and deceased estate do pass this order to the following effect to wit. It is ordered by this court that the said CURTIS LOW do come forward on the third Monday in June next and account with this court as the law directs administrators executors guardians and person showing the management of the estate that all his acts shall now from this time until the said CURTIS LOWE shall have accounted according to the law. With this court be deemed null and void and that he is ordered not to proceed to a sale advertised Thurs. next of the property of the said Henry Brooking decd and that a copy of this rule be served on the said CURTIS LOWE.” It was noted on Janaury 06, 1806 in Columbia County, Georgia Inferior Court Minutes 1797 – 1806, p. 316 the “…CURTIS LOW acting administrator in right of his wife on the estate of Henry T. Brooking decd has not pursued the letter of the law in care and management of sd [said] estate.” The following guardianships were established: William Broadnax for Isaac H. Brooking an orphan and minor of Henry T. Brooking decd $2,000.00; Edward Broadnax for Lucy Brooking, daughter and minor of Henry T. Broadnax [Brooking], decd. $2,000.00; Edward Broadnax for Edward V. Brooking minor of Henry T. Brooking late of Columbia Co. $2,000.00; CURTIS LOWE adm. in right of his wife ELIZABETH R. LOWE former ELIZABETH R. BROOKING…Auditors were appointed On September 07, 1807 CURTIS LOWE, as administrator of the estate of Henry T. Brooking, in right of his wife, late ELIZABETH R. BROOKING and administrator of the estate of Henry T. Brooking, dec’d petitioned the Court for Letters dismissory on said estate. On January 27, 1817 CURTIS LOWE was appointed guardian “to the person and property of John L. Brooking minor and orphan of the late Henry T. Brooking.” Curtis Lowe, Esq. was a legatee and executor of his father, ISAAC LOWE’S, 1806 Will who bequeathed him one tract of land containing 100 acres and some household furniture. He served as 3rd Lieutenant in Capt. Joseph Morgan’s Company of Infantry, 3rd Regiment (Few’s) Georgia Militia from September 14 til 23 March 1815 during the War of 1812. He applied for and was granted bounty land in the amount of eighty acres for his service on January 1, 1851. He joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1815. Curtis Lowe, Esq. moved to Warren County, Georgia in 1821 where he lived for the remainder of his life. He served as Judge of the Inferior Court of Warren County, Georgia from September 3, 1834 until January 05, 1837 and again from January 05, 1837 until January 4, 1841 (two terms). He served as a Representative to the Georgia Legislature from Warren County in 1838. The children of CURTIS LOWE and his wife ELIZABETH REBECCA were: 1. William Lowe, born about 1810 and died before 05 October 1829; 2. Curtis G. Lowe, born 09 December 1815, married Jane Eleanor Shaw; Administered his father’s estate and the estate of his stepmother, with his brother David W. Lowe. 3. Thomas Lowe, died before 05 October 1829; 4. DAVID W. LOWE, born 16 February 1818 in Columbia County, Georgia, died 17 October 1876 in Warren County, Georgia; married ELIZABETH FRANCES BEALL 17 February 1836 in Warren County, Georgia ; She was born 19 January 1826 in Warren County, Georgia died on 24 May 1883 in Warren County, Georgia. 5. James M. Lowe 6. Rebecca A. Lowe, born about 1812, died before 1855, married Henry M. Massengale. ELIZABETH REBECCA (BRODNAX) BROOKING d born 22 December 1775 in Virginia and died 17 April 1848 in Warren County, Georgia. She was a legatee in the 1783 Will of her grandfather JOHN JACOB COIGNAN DANZEE who bequeathed her a negro girl Lettice. Died in Warren County, Georgia April 17, 1848. CURTIS and ELIZABETH REBECCA are buried in the old Wrightsboro Cemetery in the former Wrightsborough Quaker Settlement in present day McDuffie County. The inscription on their obelisk memorial marker includes this information: Curtis L. Lowe, Esq. Dec. 8 1783 – 1855, B. in Columbia Co., moved to Warren Co., 1821, where he lived until his death. A member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for 40 years. Elizabeth R. (wife) Dec. 23, 1775 – Apr. 17, 1848, B. in Virginia “The noblest trait of character that abides in a Christian heart was found in our mother’s; that of Charity, without which no man shall see the Lord…” On May 10, 1849 CURTIS married (as his second wife) Mrs. Matilda Torrence, a widow in Warren County, Georgia. No children were born to CURTIS and Matilda. CURTIS applied for Letters of Administration on her estate when she died intestate in December, 1854. CURTIS died, intestate, in Warren County, Georgia 04 October 1855. His estate was administered by his sons DAVID W. LOWE and Curtis. G. Lowe beginning November 20, 1855 and continued for several years. They were granted letters of administration in December, 1855 having posted a Bond of sixty thousand dollars. An ad for the sale of the estate was placed in The Chronicle Sentinel in 1856. Among the items listed in the inventory of his estate were plantation tools, oxen, 40 slaves, and 15 shares of Georgia Railroad stock. On November 20, 1855 the slave property of CURTIS LOWE was divided to his heirs. [CURTIS LOWE was administrator of the estate of Matilda LOWE, he signed a security bond along with his sons Curtis G. Lowe and DAVID W. LOWE. When CURTIS LOWE died in 1855, Curtis G. LOWE and his brother DAVID W. LOWE were appointed administrators De Bonis Nun for both their father’s and stepmother’s estates] for Curtis G. Lowe and his brother DAVID W. LOWE applied for Letters of Administration on the estate of their step-mother, Matilda Lowe, De Bonus Non - in place of their father who had died before administration of the estate was complete. Letters were granted and the estate was administered.
