It is a love letter from one Madison Layton of Summerville, Ga in Richmond County to my great grandmother, Lucy Adell Williams (nicknamed “Pinkie”). According to the Avery family Bible, she was born in Sharon, Georgia in 1877. This letter, as well as others was found together in a Roi-Tan cigar box. As of this transcription, the letter is 110 years old. It is written in pencil on blue lined paper, like a writing tablet. The writing is starting to fade. The envelope is torn open on the left hand side, a habit Pinkie had in opening her letters. There is no postmark nor stamp. Some one has written Dec 10, 1897 from Pinkie in pencil near the upper right hand corner. It is transcribed as written. Envelope addressed to Mr. H. R. Avery, Sharon, GA Sharon GA Dec 10, -97 Buddie My Dearest one as it was so I could not get my letter off to day, I hope you will succeed in getting it in time. Please do not think hard of me for it for I was not at home last night and could not sent it off to day. I am going to Anna’s Sunday and will look for you without fail. I could not leave satisfied without seeing you. I shall expect you to go as far as Crawfordville as you promised. Now don’t disappoint me for you may know I want to see you awful bad. Get here as soon as you can we will have to leave early to meet the train and I know you don’t want it to leave me. As I have no news much I close with the expectation of seeing you Sunday and if I don’t I will leave with a broken heart. And I don’t want to have that to do. So by by dearest until I see you. Ever your true one Pinkie Williams Additional Comments: Pinkie and Buddy were married January 16, 1898.
