Historical Society pg. 51-52: John Emmett Harrison was one of the sons of Joseph E. Harrison and Esther Matilda Jenkins Harrison. His parents came to Washington County, Georgia, from Onslow County, North Carolina in the early 1800s, settling in the Pleasant Hill Community. His paternal line goes back to the Benjamin Harrison that came to the colony of Virginia in the early 1600s from England. His maternal lineage goes back to Gov. John Jenkins of North Carolina in the 1680s, who also came to that colony from England in the mid- 1600s. His early church experiences were under the ministries of the Rev. Jordan Smith, as his parents were members of Limestone Church, which Rev. Smith organized about 1830 after leaving Jordan's Meeting House in Davisboro. Rev. Harrison's mother and father are buried in the old Limestone Cemetery, which is on property owned by Rev. Harrison's great, great grandson, Dr.Harold Harrison. Rev. Harrison was born December 12, 1814, in Washington County. He had six brothers, three of whom were Baptist preachers. His brothers were: Lewis Jenkins Harrison, Drury Washington Harrison, Joseph Daniel Harrison, Seaborn Uriah Harrison, Benjamin Thomas Harrison. He had one sister, Nancy Jones New. In May of 1843, Rev. Harrison married Sarah E. Frost, daughter of James Frost, who came to Burke County from North Carolina about 1805, then came to Washington County and settled in the same community as did Joseph and Esther Harrison. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Pleasant Hill Baptist Church passed the following resolution at his death: "We feel that truly a good man in Israel has fallen. Rev. John E. Harrison died at home in Washington County, August 22, 1886. He was born Dec. 12,1814, and lived the larger portion, or all of his life, in Washington County and in the same community. He joined New Bethel Baptist Church Nov. 20, 1841. He commenced preaching in 1868 and was ordained to the ministry of the Gospel on April 24, 1879. After his ordination, he was pastor of churches from year to year as long as his health would permit." "Therefore, be it resolved, that in the death of Brother Harrison, Pleasant Hill Church has lost a beloved member, the cause of Christ a faithful witness, his family a devoted husband and father, and the community an upright citizen." "Second, that we tender our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our deceased brother, committing them to the God of the fatherless and the widow assuring them of our continued protection and interest." "Third, That these resolutions be spread upon the Church books and the clerk furnish a copy to the bereaved family, and also one to the Middle Georgia Progress, with a request to publish the same. David J. Pew, W. W. Price, C.S. Meadows, Committee." Brother Harrison was pastor of the following churches: Nails Creek, Jefferson County; Pleasant Hills and Pleasant Plains, Washington County; Rehoboth, Johnson County; Oak Chapel, Emanuel County; and Red Bluff, Montgomery County. He also did a great deal of evangelistic work in different sections of the country." Additional Comments: The history lists his name incorrectly. It was John Ennett which was also his father's middle name. Ennett is a family name. There is a will for Elizabeth Ennett in Washington County who names Joseph Harrison, John's father, in her will as a beneficiary. Upon Joseph's death, his children receive his share of her estate equally.
