His birth place and parents are unknown. He died about 1786-1787 in Franklin County, North Carolina. His wife was Martha, called “Patsy”, last name unknown. She was born 1769-1770 and died 6-6-1861 in Wake County, North Carolina. There were more than one William Jones in Franklin County, North Carolina at the same time but the William Jones of this family lived in Dunn’s District which is located in the Southernmost tip of Franklin County. It is today Dunn Township. When the inventory of his estate was made 9-13-1788, it was signed by John McCone but should have read John Cone and not McCone, as the administrator. It was witnessed by Fredrick Jones and John Jones. (John Jones was the brother of William Jones. Fredrick’s relationship, if any, is not known.) John had a son, William, who also went to Washington County, Georgia along with some of his other relatives. The only other information known about John is explained in the following notations because he was a very important Uncle to James and Elizabeth, remaining close to them evidently becoming a “father figure”. He, too, moved to Washington County, Georgia just as James and Elizabeth did. William and Martha “Patsy” Jones had two known children, James who was born about 1785-1786, and Elizabeth, born 1784, both children born in Franklin County, North Carolina. James died 1841 in Washington County, Georgia. Allen Smith and an Elizabeth Jones were the administrators of his estate. This Elizabeth Jones was not the Elizabeth Jones who was his sister because by 1841, she had already married in 1803 and had become Elizabeth Massey. The Elizabeth of James’s estate has not yet been identified nor has she been located following 1841 but there are indications that she may have been James’s wife and that she may have been a Barfield or Barefield. Elizabeth, the daughter of William and Martha “Patsy” Jones, was married 2-21- 1803 in Franklin County, North Carolina to Abel Massey who was born 1778 in Franklin County, North Carolina. Abel was the son of Richard Massey who was born about 1742 in Brunswick County, Virginia and died 1815 in Franklin County, North Carolina. Elizabeth died 6-10-1859 and her husband, Abel, died 4-18-1859. Both died in Washington County, Georgia. After William died and before James and Elizabeth became adults, John Williams was appointed their Guardian. John Williams was a long-time friend of the family and was born 1754 in Bute County, North Carolina. A Revolutionary Soldier he died 6-1845 in Wake County, North Carolina. Martha’s pension application on his War record can be read on the Wake and Franklin Counties, N.C. U.S. GenWeb sites placed there courtesy of Guy Potts. In 1813, with Henry Baker as a witness, Martha “Patsy”, the widow of William Jones, married the Guardian of her children, John Williams, and when the Masseys and James and Elizabeth moved to Washington County, Georgia, John Williams and Martha “Patsy” remained in North Carolina but moved over to Wake County from Franklin County, They had one known son, Jeremiah Williams, age 35 in 1850 (born 1815) who is shown in the home with her on the 1850 Wake County, North Carolina census, John Williams having died five years prior. - - - - - CHRONOLOGY - - - - - 1769-1770 Martha “Patsy”(unknown maiden name) Jones was born. 1784 – 1787 NORTH CAROLINA TAXPAYERS Book GRANVILLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA William Jones and John Jones, both on page 90. 1786 (about) William Jones died. Jones, Abraham in Floyd’s District of Washington County, Georgia received Land Lot # 341 of Section 17 of Early County, Georgia. Abraham (Abram) is believed to be related to William and John because Elizabeth Jones Massey named a son Abram Jones Massey and because he was living in the same district (Floyd’s) as John Jones. 1820 Dec. 5 THE SOUTHERN RECORDER in Washington County, Georgia listed Abel Massey as a land lottery winner. 1820 WASHINGTON COUNTY, GEORGIA CENSUS Jones, John Males 2 16-26, 1over 45 (Elizabeth’s Uncle) Females 1 10-16, 1 over 45 Massey, Abel and Elizabeth (in Massey records). 1825 WASHINGTON COUNTY, GEORGIA TAX DIGEST Massey, Abel is agent for John Jones (see Massey records). 1828 WASHINGTON COUNTY, GEORGIA TAX DIGEST Massey, Abel is agent for John Jones (see Massey records) 1830 WASHINGTON COUNTY, GEORGIA CENSUS Jones, James Males 2 under 5, l 10-15, 1 30-40 Females 1under 5, 1 5-10, 1-30-40,1 70-80 Massey, Abel and Elizabeth (in Massey records). 1837 ACTS from WASHINGTON COUNTY, GEORGIA WEBSITE,on inter-net. Washington Sec. 26. And be it further enacted, That Jonathan Lyon, John Hardin, Solomon Harrell, John B. Massey, Morgan Brown, John Williams (this is not the John Williams who married Martha “Patsy” Jones but is his son, evidently from a prior marriage.), William Slade, James Jones, and Jabez Joiner be, and they are hereby appointed Trustees for Dee’s Academy in the county of Washington. 1841 James Jones died, his estate administered by Allen Smith and an Elizabeth Jones. 1850 WASHINGTON COUNTY, GEORGIA CENSUS, on inter-net. Jones, William 65 (born 1785) born S.C. Abel 24 born Ga. Delila 21 born Ga. Martha 18 born Ga. It’s not certain that this William belongs in this family and making it even more skeptical is the fact that he was born in S.C. Still, he has an Abel and Martha (perhaps named for Abel Massey and Martha “Patsy” Jones Massey?) He most likely fits in the family somewhere so I recorded him. I believe him to be John’s son and that he was recorded as being born in South Carolina in error. 6-6-1861 Martha “Patsy” Jones (the widow of William Jones and the widow of John Williams), died in Wake County, North Carolina. She had out lived two husbands and both of her known children but was left with many descendents. There most likely are more records on this family but this was all that was available to me. Someone with more and different resources could probably learn more.
