They appear on the 1820 Washington County, Georgia census with other of my ancestors -- John Whittle, Benjamin Williamson, Abel Massey and William Barwick with only one household between James Smith and Abel Massey's household being the family of Elisha Cannon, his relationship, if any, is unknown. Three households are before James Smith and between him and Benjamin Williamson's household. Records can be found on James Smith and Allen Smith in Robeson County, North Carolina with some scattered in Craven County and other surrounding counties. The next record found for James Smith following the 1820 census is the 1825 Washington County, Georgia Tax Digest where it is shown as the "James Smith Estate". On this record, his estate was listed in two parts. One part was shown as 510 acres of pine timber land located on S. Hill bounded by Mr. Massey. The other part was listed as 233 acres of pine timber land located on S. Hill bounded by Mr. Harrell. S. Hill was the name of the water course which drained the area and in Washington County, S. Hill could have meant one of two water courses; Sandy Hill which flows into Buffalo Creek and is located in the southwestern part of Washington County, or it might have been Sun Hill Creek which flows into the Williamson Swamp Creek located in the southeastern section of Washington County. Judging from their close proximity in the 1820 census records and this being the 1825 Tax Digest, I tend to believe that his home was on the part that was bounded by Mr. Massey and on the Sun Hill Creek that flowed into Williamson Swamp Creek that belonged to Benjamin Williamson. The other property was just extra that he owned. The tax on the James Smith estate for a total of 743 acres of timberland was 87 cents. The estate of James Smith was Administered by his widow, Matilda and Gideon Smith. They applied to also sell his land lot 228 in the third district of Baldwin County which was then Putnam County. James Smith is believed to have been born about 1775 or prior. This is based on the 1820 census showing him as "over 45" and on Matilda's age in the 1850 census in which it can be figured that she was born in 1779. She has not been found on the 1860 census so evidently died 1850 - 1860. Allen Smith, born 1803, married Willa (sometimes called Willie) Massey. They were neighbors on the 1820 census with only one household between them. Willa, born 1805 - 1807, was the daughter of Abel Massey and Elizabeth Jones Massey. Allen and Willa moved from Washington County to Thomas County, Georgia about 1855 evidently remaining in Washington County long enough to care for his mother in her last days. Allen and Willa Smith's daughter, Sarah Ann Smith, had married William Barwick September 28, 1845 in Washington County, Georgia and by 1860, they, with her parents, had gone to South Georgia with the Barwicks. She was born in Washington County, Georgia and died after 1880 in Colquitt County, Georgia. Her husband, William Barwick, was born 1824 - 1826 in Washington County, Georgia and also died sometime after 1880 in Colquitt County, Georgia. He was the son of William Barwick who went to war before his marriage, serving in Georgia Militia, Few's Regiment, Capt. Edwards' Company from September 26, 1814 to March 2, 1815 in Washington County, Georgia. He was discharged at Burke County, Georgia. Two years after his discharge from service, he married Sarah Whittle in 1817 in Washington County, Georgia and they made their home there until moving to Thomas County, Georgia in 1850. Sarah Whittle was born August 6, 1792 in South Carolina, the daughter of Rev. John Whittle who was born 1760-1770 and his wife, Winnifred (Winnie) Whittle who was born January 6, 1771. Rev. Whittle died March 6, 1836 in Washington County, Georgia, and William Barwick administered his estate. A short while later, William and Sarah Whittle Barwick moved to Thomas County, Georgia. Where they settled was very near the boundary line of Thomas and Brooks Counties, Georgia, and a town sprang up there that was named for them called Barwick, Georgia. Sarah Whittle Barwick died 1850-1860 in Thomas County, Georgia and her husband, William Barwick, died July 6, 1855 in Thomas county when he was stabbed while attempting to break up a drunken brawl that took place while the crowd was viewing a hanging on a downtown street in Thomasville, Georgia.
