July 31 Mr. J.S. Smith Dear son I take the pleasure of answering yore short letter whitch came to han several days a go and found us all well and hoping those few lines will find you in good health and doin well. Well Samson I delaed writin on the a count of the gineral meetin bein near at han so it is over and afine meetin we had and a large turnout and the word of God preached every day. I believe son you never wrote any thing about how to git money to you nor wheather thare was any train office thare. I want you to answer this letter as soon as you can an if it will take fifty dollars to carry you through thare and bring you home or to get you to merser. I thought that I had sent a nuf money for you not bin behine with yore expensis. I will state the amount of money I have sent as you never say any thing about it wheather you got any or not. I give you 20 d at the start then 35 / 10 / 15 / 50 / 45 this is $ 175. I will say somtin about our farm we have the shortist prospect of any thin bein made that we have had in more years in the beginin it was very dry for five weeks on the fourth sunday in Jun we got the first rain and thare hant bin a day since but what it rains hear or in sight as I know off the pea crop was washed up an buried to geather the cotton cant be half the corn an the low lay is dead an so is the cotton an sane is ruin on low filases the watter havent stop runin in our farm yet on the low lands and it raned last nite heave and three or fore heavy shower this morning an look for a nother we havent bin able to finish layin by our crop short wheat crop no fruit corn bad short an cotton not half so I will for this time hoping to hear from you soon Yore father as eve M.G.W.Smith Additional Comments: Malichi George Washington Smith wrote this letter to his son Joseph Sampson Smith while he was in collage.
