D, 59th Regiment, Anderson's Brigade. He enlisted May 8, 1862 in Tennille Ga., for 3 years or the duration of the war. A number of men enlisted as green recruits at the same time along with many who were re-enlisting after serving with Capt. Hollifield's State Troops for about 1 year. These men made up what was called the Bullard Guards. His regiment fought in the Battle of Gettsburg. He suffered a gunshot wound to the left arm, shoulder and a pierced lung. He rejoined his group in early 1864 while the army was camped at winter quarters in Tennessee. Private M.G.W. Smith surrendered along with his company at Appomatox Court House on April 9, 1865. I cannot find where Malachi ever filed for any Pension. He was a farmer and a blacksmith. He also operated a brick kiln on his farm that supplied brick for building purposes for himself and his neighbors.
