Rudisill This company was originally part of Company D which was split, in December 1862, into two companies, forming Company B commanded by Capt. John W. Rudisill, and Company E commanded by Capt. J. J. Newsome. Names preceded by a * indicate that the individual was a member of Company D prior to the split, and that no record exist for him after the split. This company was made up of men from the Washington County area. The primary source for the following information is the Compiled Service Records, GA Dept. of Archives and History, drawer 254 boxes 31-35, with additional information from the records of the Soldier Roster Commission, GA Dept. of Archives and History, RG-58-2-26 box 83 Loc. 3297-15. Information was also taken from private letters, county histories, and local newspapers when available. PR indicates information from pension records. Confederate Military History Vol. VII pg 474 list James as one of 5 brothers who served in the Confederate Army. The others were Francis, William, Michael, and Robert. They were sons of Michael Arneau of Florida, and Mary A. Culbert Arneau of Charleston, SC. Avant George L., Pvt., Enlisted 5/14/62, Sandersville, Wounded 9/19/64 Winchester. 1850 Census list George L. Avant age 10 living Washington Co in the household of Barbary Avant. In the same household, Hardy H. and William A. Avant. 1870 Census list George L. Avant living Washington Co GA age 28. PR Applied Washington Co. 4/13/00. Born 12/15/38 in Washington Co. Living Oconee, GA. A farmer, supported by labor of his children. He has a wife and 2 orphan grandchildren. He was wounded in the right Shoulder at Winchester, leaving right arm weak. Witness B.S. Boatright stated that George served until the surrender. Witness Capt. George W. Peacock stated that he was in command of Co. E at the Battle of Winchester, and he knows that G.L. Avant was wounded and sent to the hospital at Lynchburg, VA. He also states that on 10/24/64 he received a furlough to go home from Lynchburg, and that he and the applicant, G.L. Avant got on the same train toward GA. Later Peacock received orders to carry all furloughed soldiers in Washington Co. belonging to the Army of Northern VA back to their commands. At that time, G.L. Avant's physical condition was such that he could not travel. His furlough was extended several times, and he was at home at the time of the surrender. Avant James R., Pvt., Enlisted 9/26/63, Decatur, Wounded 10/19/64 Ceder Creek. 1850 Census list James R. Avant age 24 living Washington Co. PR Widow Crissie C. (Lucretia) Avant applied Washington Co. 4/1/91. She had been a resident of GA since birth.They married 1848. She stated that James contracted Consumption as a result of his wound, and died 4/30/74, having been a hale and hardy man when he enlisted. Witness' G.L. Avant, W.H. Avant,and M.G. Wood Sen. all of Washington Co. stated that they were James neighbors before the war, during the war, and since the war, and that they served with him in the 12th GA Battalion, and were with him when he died at home. Her pension application was turned down initially due to a lack of proof that the Consumption actually resulted from the wound. A physician stated that J.R. Avant was suffering from the effects of the wound that he received 10/64 and in the early stage of Consumption in 1865. A Mrs. Eliza Hodges stated that she had known the parents and the grandparents of J.R. Avant for over 60 years and know of no case of Consumption in the family. Pension was allowed. Crissie movedto Oconee Co. in 1892, and back to Washington Co. in 1893. In 1907 she requested that her pension be remitted to W.H. Avant. PR Applied Washington Co. 9/13/04. Born 7/25/35 Abbeville Dist. SC. A resident of GA since 1856. A farmer with a wife age 59, and 3 children, 2 sons ages 35 & 24, 1 daughter age 22. He served as superintendent of county Poor Farm. Witness George W. Peacock was in command of Co. E, and was present at the surrender, and further stated that he had known the applicant since 1857. The witness stated that the applicant was captured 3/25/65. W.D. Barksdale applied in Chatham Co. 9/5/08. Witness in 1908 was W.K.Ward of D Co. 12th GA also of Savannah who was also at Point Lookout POW camp at wars end. William is buried Bay Springs Methodist Church Cemetery Washington County. He died Washington Co. 7/85. She stated that her husband was present at the surrender. Witness J.A. Robson was wounded 2/6/65 and stated that Barnes was present when he left the command wounded. At the time of her application, she was almost blind,living with her children. She had 2 children, a married daughter in AL, son in law a railroad agent, and a son working in Atlanta. She was a resident of GA all her life. James was a POW at Point Lookout POW Camp. He was received at Cox's landing James River for exchange 2/14-15/65. James died 8/30/80 in Washington Co. After his death, Ruth married W.H. Harrison according to witness L. Davis. N.M. Jordan was present at James and Ruth's marriage. Witness M.E. Rogers of Travis Co. Texas was present at the marriage also. He was in the same command as James, but in E Co. Rogers was on parole at Jefferson Co. GA at the time of the surrender awaiting exchange. James was also on parole at Jefferson Co. at the same time. They married 4/25/67 at Davisboro, Washington Co. GA. She was a resident of GA all her life. S.T. Jordan died 11/12/02 at Dawson, Terrell Co. GA. Jordan served first in Ramsey's 1st GA, Howell's Battery, and the 12th GA Battalion. She stated that he had been home on sick leave, but was in Augusta on his way back to the command at the time of the surrender. He had left the command in VA with chronic diarrhea. Witness J.A. Robson of Washington Co. stated that Jordan enlisted at Savannah in the Spring of 1863, and that he (the witness) had left the command wounded 2/6/65, and that Jordan was with the command when he left. (The date is far from correct, but he probably is referring to Monocacy, on the date which he list, the company was on picket duty at Big Creek Gap in TN) Witness J.A. Robson agreed with the date and the location of applicant's wound. Witness I. Herman served with applicant in 1st GA. Witness W.G. PR Widow applied Laurens Co. 10/16/19. She was a GA resident all her life. John Taylor married Amanda Melvina Moye 8/13/61 in Washington Co. He died in Laurens Co. in 1896. She stated that he was captured by the enemy at Richmond, VA and released after the surrender. Witness B.S. Boatright of Washington Co. stated that he had known Amanda Taylor all his life, and that he believed that John Taylor was captured after he, the witness, was wounded 2/65. Watkins of Washington Co. stated that he had known Turner for 40 odd years, and he served through out the war, a faithful soldier until the surrender. She stated that her husband served first in the 1st GA and latter in Rudisill's Artillery, and that he was present at the surrender. Witness B.S. Born GA several birth dates given 1824-1832. A farmer supported by children, has a wife but no children living at home. 2 boys and 3 girls all married ages boy 49, 47, 44, boy 40, and 35. Enlisted 14th GA and served 6 months, discharged due to Rheumatism, could not walk. Joined 12th GA, discharged by surrender. Witness I.M. Hartley stated that Underwood joined at James Island in 1863, and performed military service until surrender. She stated that he enlisted in Savannah in 1863, and that he was captured a few days before surrender, in prison at time of surrender. Witness D.R. Underwoodstated that he (the witness) was present at the surrender and that the applicant was in a Yankee Prison taken captive a few days before surrender. William Howell was also a witness.
