"Aunt" Penny lives on the farm of J.C. McDonald, near Warthen, and although extremely aged, works in her Victory garden, sweeps yards, and carries in wood. The old colored woman remembers vividly Sherman's march through this county in 1864. She remembers having to burn corn cobs to get soda with which to make bread, and seeing cotton gins operated by blind-folded mules who were driven around and around turning a long pole. "Aunt Penny" declares that what keeps her alive is tar poultices and God. She does not need to wear glasses, but has never learned to read or write. Her mistress in the days before the War Between the States was a woman doctor by the name of Harris.
