Middle Georgia Progress July 17, 1894
  Last Thursday morning, a few miles below Tennille, Mr. W.J. Bush shot and
killed his father-in-law, Mr. Jesse G. Joiner. There has been trouble between
them before. Two or three months ago Mr. Joiner shot at Mr. Bush, the ball
missing the mark and striking his daughter, Mrs. Bush, in the breast.
  A justice court trial was held at Sandersville, presided over by three
justices, but the case was compromised by the two men making friends. It has
been expected that the difficulty would be renewed and culminate in a tragedy.
Mr. Bush had a shot gun with him on the morning of the tragedy. It is not known
what was said before the shooting took place. Mr. Bush states that Mr. Joiner
threatened to shoot him, and that he then shot Mr. Joiner.
  Mr. Bush came to Sandersville, surrendered to Sheriff Wall, and is now
confined in jail, awaiting the action of the courts. Coroner Lowe held an
inquest and the jury returned the following verdict: "W.J. Bush did, on the 10th
day of July, 1894, unlawfully shoot and kill Jesse G. Joiner, and we believe the
same to be voluntary manslaughter." The jury was composed of J.D. Orr, J.D.
Brantley, J.T. Hartley, J.C. Layton, G.W. Hartley, and T.J. Johnson.
  Sidney Bush, son of W.J. Bush, was a witness to the killing. Mr. Joiner had
some time ago been thought to be of unsound mind. He was about sixty-five years
of age.
  The commitment trial of Mr. Bush will take place this morning.
