Towards the close of the War Between the States, about the time that Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman was on his famous march through Georgia, he ran away from his owner and went to Savannah. A recruiting office was opened there and he had his name entered on the roll of volunteer soldiers. Within a short period after that event the war was ended by the surrender of Gen. Robert Edward Lee at Appomatox, and he never saw any active service, but his name was on the roll and when the government began paying pensions he became one of the beneficiaries. He is said to be one hundred and four years old, is now blind, and the government recently increased his pension from $72.00 to $90.00 per month, which he will continue to receive as long as he lives. The old man was in former years very industrious and did garden work for many of the citizens of Sandersville, but is now too feeble to do manual labor. He has always been humble and respectful, and is one of our best colored citizens.
