Smith caved in. The concrete walk in front of the home of Dr. Herbert Elder also sank down several inches. These sinks were caused by underground erosion due to recent incessant rains. For several days the new pump well at the municipal plant has been flowing mud and sand and it was stated that this material was being washed into the well from adjacent surface pockets. Although this water is not considered healthy, it is being treated with clorine gas which destroys all germs and makes the water perfectly safe. Mr. R. Lee Smith stated that he heard a rumbling noise early Tuesday morning which later proved to be the surface of the earth caving in. These caves have appeared in various sections of the city for the past several years.
