Saturday Mr. Tanner heard a commotion in his chicken yard and spied a huge copperhead snake that was giving birth to a litter of young. Mr. Tanner secured his shot gun and killed the reptile and saw the balance of the litter emerge. The young were about six inches long and all were captured, placed in a fruit jar and brought to Sandersville where they were displayed. Commenting on the often told story about snakes' eggs, Mr. Tanner said it was the first time he had ever seen a snake give birth to a litter of young. C.G. Wiggins, Jr. employed for some time at the snake farm near Davisboro, said that herpetologists have found only two species of snakes in the United States that give birth to their young and they are the moccasins and rattlesnakes. Other species hatch their young from eggs.
