Brett Jr., manager of the Arcade Theater confessed Sunday to the early morning shooting of Warren Candler "Pat" English, 57, according to Sheriff A.W. Smith. Both men were in a poker game late Saturday night at the Air Diner, Mr. English's eating establishment on the Tennille road, it was reported. They got into a physical altercation and Mr. Brett shot Mr. English three times near the heart with a revolver. Mr. English died instantly. After the shooting, which occurred around 5 a.m. Sunday, Mr. Brett called Sheriff Smith from the diner and reported the killing. Mr. Brett said there were no eye witnesses to the shooting, the Sheriff stated. Sheriff Smith arrested Mr. Brett with a murder warrant sworn out by B.F. "Dock" English, nephew of the victim. The warrant was issued by E.C. May, Justice of the Peace. Coroner Ralph Ivey called an inquest Sunday to determine the cause of Mr. English's death. The jury met and adjourned until Monday morning, at which time it rendered a verdict of "death from one revolver fired by T.J. Brett Jr.". Serving on the coroner's jury were Amos Bryan, Tarver Holmes, Alex Davidoff, Hoyt Williams, Binion Avant and Howard Sheppard. Mr. Brett, who has a wife and two young sons, volunteered for the Navy in 1942 and spent more than three years in the service before being honorably discharged in December, 1845. During that time, he had a good service record and was promoted to First Class Petty Officer before discharge, his family reported. Funeral services for Mr. English were held at 4 p.m. Monday, April 17, from Lang's Chapel with the Rev. H.G. Shearouse, pastor of the Sandersville Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in Brownwood Cemetery with Lang's Chapel in charge of arrangements. Pall bearers were Newsom Summerlin, Eaton Sheppard, Hubert Roughton, J.B. Wall, H.L. McCaskell and L.S. Wilkes. Mr. English is survived by one brother, F.A. English; three sisters, Mrs. Roy Walton, Mrs. Frank Armstrong and Mrs. J.E. Hyman; and several nieces and nephews. Born in Washington County October 28, 1892, Mr. English operated the Air Diner and made his home with his sister, Mrs. Walton. He was a member of the Sandersville Methodist Church. A member of the American Legion, he served as a Marine Corps. Sergeant in both World War I and II. He saw overseas duty during World War I, and spent more than two years in the service during the last war. His father, the late W.M. English was Sheriff of Washington County for eight years. His brother, the late B.A. English, was county Sheriff for 20 years.
