Sunday morning Sheriff Doolittle went to give the inmates in the jail their breakfast when he found that Reuben was apparently dead. He had no pulse and his body was cold. He informed Major Newman who directed him to hold an inquest, buy the coffin and burial clothes and notify the relatives of the negro. Q. Richards, Esq., acting as coroner, summoned a jury to inquire into the cause of death and they went to the jail to hold the inquest. After reaching the jail where Reuben was stretched out one of the jurors saw him move his foot. Further investigation proved that life was not extinct. A messenger had been sent to notify the relatives of Reuben who arrived Sunday afternoon to carry the body to his home for burial, when much to their surprise they found that he was alive. Reuben will be sent to the asylum as soon as a place can be found for him.
