Difficulty Arose About Finanical Affairs In Connection With Farmers and Merchants Bank. The news rapidly spread Friday afternoon that Mr. Thomas H. Hartley, a well known farmer who lived near Tennille. Earlier in the day, Mr. Hartley had called to see Mr. T.W. Price at the Farmers and Merchants Bank about some finanical transaction, and became enraged, threatening to kill Mr. Price. Attempts were made by the Hartley family to get him quiet, but without avail. Later he went to his home and came back with Mr. John Lindsey. They had a rifle in the car and it is reported that they rode through the streets rapidly. Some of the citizens of Tennille were apprehensive that a tragedy was impending and made a call over the telephone to Sheriff B.A. English to come over and make arrests, but Sheriff English was not at home at the time, and his son, Deputy Sheriff Teddy English, responded. Night Marshal M.B. English of Tennille, who is not related to the family of the Sheriff, accompanied the deputy sheriff in a car and they pursued the car in which Hartley and Lindsey were riding. It is reported that when the two cars were near each other, a short distance from the Confederate monument, Lindsey reached back and picked up the rifle, when J.B. English, riding on the running board, fired a load of buckshot at Hartley, killing him instantly and wounding Lindsey in the shoulder. The car kept on its course and crashed into the glass in front of the Tennille Drug Company. Warrents were sworn out for J.B. English, charging him with murder, and John Lindsey charging him with minor offenses and both are now inmates of the Washington County jail. It is probable that a preliminary trial will be held sometime this week, but the time had not been fixed before this article was prepared for print. Mr. Hartley was a man of genial and friendly disposition and was well liked by those who knew him. The news of this tragic death was a shock to the entire county. He was the son of Mr. J.T. Hartley, one of Washington County's best citizens.
