Cox and His Son are Dead - Attempt To Kindle Fire At The Olive Hill Baptist Church With Gasoline Ends In Death Of Both - A sad tragedy occurred at Olive Hill Baptist Church Sunday morning when Mr. Iverson T. Cox attempted to kindle a fire by pouring gasoline in the stove, thinking at the time that the can contained kerosene. The fire had previously been made and burned down quite low. More wood was put in the stove and a can of gasoline was poured on it, the ignition resulting in the explosion of the can, scattering the contents over Mr. Cox and his child, Calvin Cox, 3 years old. He grabbed the child in his arms and ran from the building into the woods, the clothing of each one being in flames. He laid the child down and attempted to smother the flames, but without success, and then ran through the woods, setting fire to the pine straw as he ran. Others who were present hastened to render what assistance they could and finally overtook Mr. Cox and stripped the burning clothing from his body and also that of the child. They were wrapped in overcoats and blankets and brought to Rawlings Sanitarium in Sandersville as soon as possible, when it was discovered that the burns sustained by them were most severe, and the physicians pronounced them fatal. Everything possible was done to alleviate their suffering, but death was inevitable and they died from the effects of the burns within an hour of each other, Mr. Cox having passed away first. Mr. Cox was a son-in-law of Mr. R.L. Brown of the Hebron district, and is survived by his wife and another child. The two were buried Monday afternoon near the church where they received their fatal burns. Much sympathy is expressed for the family in the calamity which has overtaken them.
