He saw a snake lying within a few feet of the path and immediately threw the jug at him, when the snake started towards him at a rapid pace. As fast as his legs could carry him he ran back to the Garner dwelling, which is located on the Union Church road, a few miles West of Warthen, with the snake in full chase, and as he leaped upon the steps the snake darted under the house. Wensel was so badly frightened he lost his hat and his hair was standing straight. The snake was later killed and measured six feet in length.
