Sandersville Progress April 23, 1913
HENRY BRANTLEY WAS SHOT TO DEATH SATURDAY AT NOON NEAR WARTHEN - Henry 
Brantley, a white man, about 30 years of age, was shot to death last Saturday 
about noon, on Mr. J.H. Hooks dairy farm, two miles northwest of Warthen. A 
telephone message brought the news to Sandersville and immediately Sheriff 
Hamilton and several deputies left for the scene in two automobiles for the 
purpose of arresting the murderers, but before arriving, the negroes had 
reached Williamson swamp which is nearby and succeeded in eluding arrest.
  It is reported that the mother of the two negroes who did the shooting had 
been cooking for Brantley, who had occasion to reprimand the young daughter of 
the woman. This angered the woman and she hid the pistol and gun which was the 
property of Brantley, and then sent word to her two sons, who came to the place 
where Brantley was and called him out and commenced shooting at him. Brantley 
had no weapon to defend himself and the two negroes shot him several times, 
producing almost instant death. According to the reports it was a diabolical 
and cold blooded murder. The negroes are named Kitchens and last year were 
employed in Sandersville.
  Brantley had been employed by Mr. Hooks for several years, and was said to be 
a good farmer and a valuable employee. He was not married, but had a number of 
relatives in the county.
  A report from Jefferson county, states that the Kitchen negroes, who did the 
shooting had been surrounded in a swamp near Grange, and it was believed that 
Sheriff Smith of that county would effect their arrest.
