Thompson francist@mindspring.com November 18, 2003, 1:05 am Unknown Departed this life at his residence in Sandersville, Ga., February 26th, 1867, William Smith, Esq., in the 65th year of his age. Eulogy on the life and character of this philanthrophic and liberal man and devoted christian is unnecessary. His virtues and personal worths were well known and appreciated by all who knew him. Being enterprising and industrious and possessing, naturally a strong practical mind, success attended him all his pursuits. He amassed a large fortune and used it generally in distributing to the wants of his suffering and less fortunate fellow men. His ear was ever open to the plaintive call of the poor. Many still live who were the reciprients of his bounty who mourn their loss as one who has lost his best friend. Strong in his attachments, a generous confidence once gained, he would suffer rather than yield his prepossessions. In the estimation of some, this may have amounted to a fault, but who does not prize such a friend? His faith in Christ was strong and abiding. He met his fate with an equanimity that is peculiar to the christian alone. The writer of this brief sketch had visited him often in affliction, and always found him ready for the Master's call. "The chamber where the good man meets his fate Is privileged beyond the common walls of virtuous life, Here tire'd dissemulation drops her mask, You see the man." A.
