Smith died at his residence in Sandersville last Thursday, in the seventieth year of his age, from congestion of the brain. For several years he had been in feeble health, but was able to be up a good portion of the time, and made frequent trips to his farm west of Sandersville. Mr. Smith was born and raised in Washington county, where he spent nearly all his life. He lived in southwest Georgia a few years. He was a genial and kind hearted man, an upright citizen, and had many friends who heard of his death with profound sorrow. He had been married twice. He leaves a widow, but no children. The funeral services were conducted at his late residence, Friday morning at 9 o'clock, by Rev. Wm. Park, after which the burial took place in the city cemetery, many relatives and friends being in attendance. The sympathies of our people are extended to the grief stricken wife and sisters and other relatives. *************** An Old Landmark Gone Mr. B. R. Smith one of Sandersville's oldest and best known citizens died on Thursday last in the 70th year of his age. Mr. Smith was born, reared and spent the greater part of his life in and near Sandersville. His genial nature, courteous manners and kindness of heart won for him everywhere warmly attached friends. For many years, Mr. Smith was a great sufferer from rheumatism, and for some months his health was feeble. On Tuesday of last week he was taken with a rigor, that soon went into congestion, from which he never rallied. Mr. Smith leaves a beloved wife and three sisters, Mrs. B. D. Evans, Sen. and Mrs. P. R. Taliaferro who reside in the city and Mrs. Williamson now residing in Johnson Co. and other relatives to mourn his death. On Friday morning funeral services conducted by Rev. Wm. Park, were held at the house after which the body was laid to rest in the city cemetery. Note: At bottom of obituary was handwritten Aug 1896. *************** Windsor, Fla. - Aug. 29, 1896 Tribute of Respect Died in Sandersville, GA., on 20th, of August, 1896, Mr. Benjamin R. Smith, only surviving male member of one of Sandersville's oldest and most honorable families. He leaves a widow, formerly Miss Winifred Hooks of Washington county, and three sisters -- Mesdames Evans and Taliaferro of Sandersville and Mrs. Williamson of Burke, county, Ga. Kind and charitable in disposition, he made many friends; and was called "Uncle Bennie" by all the young people. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Wm. Park, of Sandersville, and the body laid to rest in the quiet, pretty cemetery of the little city in which "Uncle Bennie" has spent the years of his life. One by one our loved are passing away, but while we grieve for them we would not recall them to the sorrows and trials of earth; for we feel assured, "Our Father knoweth best, and doeth all things well." To the bereaved relatives, we express our warmest sympathy, and would direct their thoughts to the source of all comfort, and the Healer of all our sorrows. May each of "Uncle Bennie's" surviving relatives be ready to meet our Lord, when the summons comes, and find an abundant entrance into His great and glorious Kingdom. V. K. Windsor, Fla., Aug. 29.
