Thompson francist@mindspring.com November 18, 2003, 1:34 am May 1881 Death of Samuel Jordan Smith On Thursday last at his home, surrounded by his family and loving friends S. J. Smith breathed his last, in fifty-third year of his age, he was one of our most prominent citizens, a member of the Baptist church, a leading merchant and a large planter, his life was a busy one, success had crowned his labors, and full of honors he has retired to his last resting place, he will be sadly missed, not only at home around the old hearth stone by the wife of his youth, who climbed with him the hill of life, by his children both sons and daughters whom he loved with a father's love, but all over our county he will be sadly missed; upright, truthful, honest and industrious he had made for himself a name and a reputation of which his friends may well feel proud, he was born and reared in our county, was public spirited and liberal, ever foremost in every undertaking that was calculated to elevate the standing of our people and improve their condition, but he was gone from among us and the scenes which once knew him well will know him no more forever. May he rest in peace. He was buried on Friday evening, an immense crowd following his remains, services were had in the Baptist church, Rev. Thomas M. Harris officiating in a most eloquent and acceptable manner, after which the funeral cortege moved to the cemetary where the body was placed at rest, there to remain until the resurrection morn "when the angel shall declare the mystery o'er, that time had been, but time shall be no more."
