On the 7th day of November, 1939 the angel of death invaded our ranks taking to his eternal reward our beloved brother, Joe Sampson Smith. As a citizen of our church, and as a member of this body, Brother Smith for a long number of years served his Lord earnestly and faithfully. As a citizen he always stood foresquare and uncompromising for the highest ideals of citizenship, unhesitatingly condemning evil alike in places high and low. As a church member he loved the call to come unto the house of the Lord and unless providentially prevented he assembled with the brethren whenever the Lord's house was open. As a member of this Board he was ever attentive to the business of his church. He was deeply read in the scriptures and his Bible was his constant companion. He loved the Sunday School work of the church and for a number of years was a valuable member of the teaching staff of this church, and prior had engaged in the teaching in the Sunday Schools of other churchs with which he had been affiliated. Therefore, while humbly submissive to the inscrutable working of Providence, be it resolved by the Board of Deacons of the Sandersville Baptist Church that we have suffered an irreparable loss in the passing of our brother; we shall miss him and his wise and kindly counsel as a man, as a member and as a fellow- worker for the Kingdom of our Master. It is further resolved, that we extend our deepest sympathy to the members of his family and that they be furnished with a copy of these resolutions, that a copy of these resolutions be spread upon the minutes of this board and that the same be read at the regular conference of our church and a copy be spread upon its minutes.
