WAYNE COUNTY GA Bios Lucille Harvey File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Barbara Winge barbarawinge@yahoo.com http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/wayner/bios/harvey.txt THE PRESS-SENTINEL Jesup, Wayne County, Georgia March 21, 1977 - Page 3 C HOBBY CORNER LUCILLE HARVEY: RETIREMENT IS HOBBY Lucille Harvey has made a hobby of retirement and loves every minute of it! Reading, remodeling, bike riding, and needlework are a few of the hobbies she has cultivated since her retirement in December, 1973. She also manages to sandwich civic and church jobs in among them. Her son, Billy, gave her yarn for a crocheted afghan when she retired, which she "more or less practiced on." She plans another which she will start in the near future. But, in the meantime, she was involved in needlepoint, and says she is so fascinated by it she can hardly put it down, and even gets up to needlepoint during the night if she can't sleep. Shortly after Christmas she began a picture of mallard ducks for Billy and his wife in Atlanta which she has almost completed. She has already purchased her next project - a picture of cherry blossoms to needlepoint for her bedroom. After retirement, she began work remodeling a duplex on Fernandina Beach. She even poured the patio and sodded the lawn herself. She spends a good bit of time there during summer months, and sometimes rents out Billy's side to people she knows. Mrs. Harvey now has time to indulge her love of reading. Although she prefers fiction, her most recent books have concerned Watergate. Somehow, she never seems to have time for bridge. She and several friends eat lunch together every day as well as a couple of dinners a week. A highlight of each week is getting together for a trip out of town for dinner and a show or shopping. Those who go, car pool which keeps the expense low and comraderie high... Working in her yard and riding each day on her three-wheel bike gives her plenty of exercise- and as with her other pursuits, she enjoys both of them. Mrs. Harvey had taught first grade for 27 years and been visiting teacher for the past nine when she retired. She stayed on, working part time as Headstart Coordinator for a few months, but soon gave that up so she could be free to go and do as she wanted. This active retiree gave up most outside commitments upon retirement, so she would not be tied down, but has kept her post on the Housing Authority and also serves as coordinator for five to eight year olds at First Methodist Church. This former teacher misses her professional contacts, but "not enough to wish I were back." Lucille Harvey is enjoying retirement entirely too much to look backwards.
