WAYNE COUNTY GA Obit - Smith, Charles File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Barbara Winge barbarawinge@yahoo.com http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/wayne/obits/smith.txt SAVANNAH MORNING NEWS February 24, 1927 Copied from the Clinton County News SMITH, CHARLES Charles Smith was a Revolutionary soldier in Barnett's company "D" of the state militia of South Carolina, and served in Hampton's regiment and Sumpter's brigade. He was born in 1763 in Edgefield district of Cheraw's Nest and died in 1840 in Wayne County, Ga., and is buried near Gardi, Ga., where a memorial has recently been erected over his grave by the Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter at Jesup. Charles Smith was the father of Mrs. James C. Smith of Clinch county, and through her many Clinch county people are descended from this old soldier. Charles Smith was married twice. There were six children by the first wife and one by his second. The first wife was Vicy Ann Ellis, who was born in 1765, and she and Charles Smith were married in 1783 in Edgefield district, S. C. She died in 1824. To her and Charles Smith were born: Mary - born 1790, married James Harper Nov. 3, 1811. Robert - born 1793, married Savannah Rozier, Dec 20, 1810. Eleanor - born 1795, married James Strickland Jan 8, 1817. Charles, Jr. - born 1799, married Eliza Strickland Dec 27, 1824. Elizabeth - born 1801, maarried Malachi Harper Aug 21, 1820. Vicy - born 1803, married Daniel Dykes. After first wife's death, in 1824 Charles Smith, Sr., was married in 1826 to Rebecca Lane of Wayne county and to them were born one child, Margaret Smith, born Jan. 1, 1827, married to James C. Smith in 1841 and died in Clinch county May 24, 1879, and buried at Homerville Cemetery. James C. Smith and Margaret Smith were the parents of the following, all of whom were reared in and citizens of Clinch county; Allen N. Smith, William T. Smith, Mrs. C. C. Drawdy, Mrs. I. T. McLendon, Mrs. M. M. Caswell, Mrs. A. J. Caswell, Mrs. H. A. O'Quinn and Mrs. E. W. O'Quinn. ==================== JESUP SENTINEL Jesup, Georgia July 21, 1921 UNVEILING AT GARDI The Altamaha Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution will on Wednesday, August 3rd, unveil a tablet furnished by the United States Government to the memory of the late Charles Smith Revolutionary Soldier, at Gardi, Ga. his home place where he settled in the year 1804. There will be an oration by Col. Gibbs, and other suitable exercises. All who are interested in the past, present and future welfare of our country are cordially invited to attend. Music in keeping with the spirit of the occasion will be furnished by the Jesup Band.
