Judge J. R. Stapleton Died At Preston Home Wednesday Afternoon Judge J. R. Stapleton, age 83, prominent citizen of Webster County, and a former Ordinary of the County died at his home in Preston Wednesday afternoon. Judge Stapleton has been in feeble health for several months but his condition had not been considered serious until recently. In his long and useful life, Judge Stapleton was always considered one of the most outstanding men, not only of his county but among the entire citizenry of this section of the state. During the civil war he served as a member of the 22nd Georgia Regiment and was one of the youngest soldiers in the Confederacy. Following the war, he located to Preston and was for many years engaged in mercantile business with the late D. W. Nicholson, of Preston and Richland, the firm being known as Stapleton and Nicholson. Later he was elected Ordinary of his county and served in this office until a few years ago. He was a Christian, and in early manhood associated himself with the Missionary Baptist Church; he was an active Mason in his home lodge and a loyal faithful and patriotic citizen of his county, state and nation. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Martha Peel Stapleton; three daughters, Mrs. J. H. Strickland, Concord; Mrs. J. F. Lunsford, Preston, and Miss Florence Stapleton, Preston; seven grandchildren, J. F. Lunsford, Concord; Miss Sadie Lunsford, Shellman; Miss Reba Strickland, Patterson, N. J.; Miss Edith Strickland, Manesquan, N. J.; Robert Strickland, Goose Creek, Texas, and Miss Eleanor and Henry Strickland of Concord, and one sister, Mrs. W. H. Clark, of Richland. Funeral services were held at Preston at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon with interment in the cemetery there. Several from Richland attended the funeral services. *Note* I believe there is a mistake in this obituary. James Richard Stapleton was married to Carrie Spann instead of Martha Peel. Martha Peel was his mother's maiden name. His father was George Jackson Stapleton. (Brenda King McNair) Source: The Stewart - Webster Journal Friday Morning, March 24, 1933, Page 8.
