At this time James A. Merriwether was Speaker of the House, and Thaddeus Sturgis was Clerk; Andrew J. Miller was President of the Senate, and Luther I. Glenn was Secretary. Honorable Howell Cobb, as Governor, approved the Bill December 30, 1851. On roll call in the House December 8, 1851, House Journal, 1851, Page 287, at 3:00 o'clock, P. M., the bill received fifty-three years and fifty-one days, S. S. Bailey, representative from Murray county, voting for the passage of the Bill. In the Senate, Senate Journal, 1851, Page 314, the Bill received fourteen votes favoring its passage, and twelve votes in opposition, on Wednesday, December 24, 1851, when it was passed. ------------- p. 185 The word: "Whitfield" was inserted in the bill at the last moment, as appears in the following part of the bill: "Be it enacted: That the new county described in the first Section of this Act, shall be known by the name of WHITFIELD, and be attached to the Cherokee Judicial Circuit." The new county was taken largely from Murray county with a small strip on the western side carved from Walker county. To Whitfield, an associate of the Wesleys, is attributed the honor of having the county named for him. Whitfield county is located just south of the 35th parallel, north latitude; 85th degree, west longitude; has an average altitude of about seven hundred feet, and an area of two hundred eighty-one square miles. The first election for county officers was held in January, 1852. The first settlers of Whitfield county were of the purest Anglo-Saxon blood, many of whom came here from North Carolina. Whitfield county has made its reasonable contribution to the body politic, and, practically without exception, its officers and representatives have acquitted themselves as persons who literally regarded public office as being a public trust. The following lists contain the names of those who have served Whitfield county, and, while there may be some omissions, in the whole the roster may be regarded as approximately correct. "He's true to God who's true to man." Originally, there were not so many districts, but in 1933, the following are the voting precincts and militia districts, given by name and number: Dalton district, 872nd District G. M., vote at Dalton; Cohutta, 1278th District G. M., vote at Cohutta; Upper Tenth, 1294th District G. M., vote at Tucker's school; Varnell, 628th District G.
