Tyler NOTE: The following lists of records of Confederate soldiers from Whitfield county were copied from papers in the State Capitol, Atlanta, Georgia. THE DALTON GUARDS Excellent and Daring Record of Our Famous Company of Militia "In the year 1861, when the tocsin of war sounded, Dalton was found with a well drilled and finely equipped military organization composed of the very flower and chivalry of our county called, 'The Dalton Guards.' This company had perhaps been in existence a year or two, and numbered one hundred and ten men. "The officers were: Captain: R. T. Cook, June 11, 1861 1st Lieutenant: J. P. B. Jackson 2nd Lieutenant: John Norris 2nd Lieutenant: Thomas Hamilton 1st Sergeant: James J. Byers 2nd Sergeant: John H. Bitting 3rd Sergeant: William Hamilton 4th Sergeant: R. P. O'Neill 1st Corporal: O. S. Higgins 4th Corporal: M. G. Hill "In the spring of 1S61, the Guards rendezvoused at Camp McDonald near what was then known as Big Shanty, and were there mustered into Phillips' Legion for three years or during the war. The Guards went to Virginia in August, 1861, November following were sent to West Virginia under General Floyd. Had several sharp skirmishes with General Rosecran's troops in December at Hawk's Nest and Sewell Mountain. "They went to the coast in South Carolina in January 1862, and did picket duty all winter. They returned to Virginia in the spring of 1863 for the campaign around Richmond and Chickahominy. From there they went to Manassas, thence into Maryland to the battles of South Mountain and the bloody battle of Sharpsburg, after which they recrossed the Potomac. "The Dalton Guards had among their volunteers several mere boys of sixteen or seventeen years of age, who fought like Trojans during the entire war. Three of them I now recall. They were Warren Davis, Nick Bitting, Tom Wells. In one or two instances Mr. Davis was conspicuous for his bravery."* The following list contains the names of the men who formed the Dalton Guards: MUSTER ROLL, COMPANY B, PHILLIPS' LEGION, GEORGIA INFANTRY, June 11, 1861 Privates Adams, John Baker, R.
