Its officers were, I. W. Avery, Captain; W. L. Cook, 1st Lieutenant; D. J. Owens, 2nd Lieutenant and H. H. Burk, 3rd Lieutenant. "This independent company was raised mainly in Whitfield county, but some of its members were from the adjoining counties. Before they left the state, the ladies of Dalton made them a beautiful stand of colors of the Southern Cross, which Miss Anna Harden in a most happy manner presented to them. "August, 1862, the Twenty-third Georgia Batalion consisting of five companies, was organized and in a short time thereafter they were ordered to join the arrmy in Tennessee. November, 1862, near Fayetteville, Tennessee, the Fourth Georgia Regiment was formed with I. W. Avery as Colonel, W. L. Cook as Lieutenant, D. J. Owens as Major, W. K. Moore Quartermaster, Columbus Waddle, Commandant, Dr. Edelin, Surgeon, Thos. L. Kelly, Assistant Surgeon and B. H. Newton, Adjutant. "The Fourth Georgia Cavalry was with General Braxton Bragg through the entire campaign in middle Tennessee. They fought gloriously at Chickamauga, Dalton, Resaca, Oostanaula, Kennesaw, Atlanta, Jonesboro on to Savannah, through the Carolinas to Bentonville. "May 26, 1864, Colonel Avery was desperately wounded at New Hope Church. He raised and led fifteen hundred men, surrendering fifty-eight under General Joseph E. Johnston in North Carolina, all that were left after participating in more than one hundred battles and skirmishes. It also took part in the capture of General Stoneman, near Macon. It was called the 'Charging Regiment' of General Crewe's Brigade. "The late Judge, C. D. McCutchen, and Colonel W. K. Moore were officers in the Fourth Georgia Regiment. Dalton furnished a number of men to the Fourth Georgia Regiment of Cavalry, who represented 'All that was lofty in principle, pure in patriotism and dauntless in courage'."* Officers Fourth Georgia Cavalry Colonel: Isaac W.
