Mystery surrounds death of Will Mitchell at Phelps. Found Tuesday morning. Was killed early Monday night and lay close to track for about eight hours before found. Will Mitchell, a farmer living about a mile below Phelps, met a mysterious death last Monday night. He was found lying close to the track of the Southern railroad early Tuesday morning. Coroner Tarver and Deputy Sheriff Britton, on hearing the news, hastened to the scene of the tragedy, and an inquest was held. The coroner's jury reached the conclusion that Mitchell had come to his death from being struck by No. 14, the Southern passenger train that reaches Dalton between 7 and 8 o'clock in the evening. The body of Mitchell was found lying within a few feet of the track. He had been bruised in the head and one foot had been cut off. Mrs. Mitchell, the wife of the deceased, when questioned, said that he had left home just a few minutes before the train passed. He had told her that he was going to Chattanooga. She added that he had hardly had time to reach the station before the train pulled out. The place where the accident occurred is about 100 yards below the station, and as neither the engineer nor the fireman on the engine saw him, it is believed that he attempted to swing the train and slipped, his foot going beneath the wheels. No one on the train knew of the accident, so he was left beside the track, to be found the next morning. It is stated by persons who saw Mitchell the afternoon before he was killed that he was drinking, and when the body was found, only about two dollars were found in his pocket. This amount was not enough to pay his railroad fare to Chattanooga and return, and, as he stated to his wife that he was going to Chattanooga, it is believed by many that he was not in a condition to know what he was doing when the accident occurred. The deceased leaves a wife and eight children. He lived on a small farm, which he had recently purchased, having paid the full amount for it. Additional Comments: Believe this is William T.D.A. Mitchell, son of David and Sarah Mitchell.
