                    EXCITEMENT IN ABBEVILLE
                       1 OCTOBER 1900
     Great excitement was caused in Abbeville when it became known that the
grand jury had returned true bills against Z. W. Lassiter, C. W. Ford, and A. J.
Harp, the managers of the primary, held there recently. The parties named in the
true bills are some of the most prominent men of Abbeville.=, both in business
and church circles. Mr. Lassiter being a member of the mercantile firm of
Lassiter, Ham & Co., while Messrs. Ford and Harp are leading members of the
Baptist Church, and the friends of all parties feel that a great injustice has
been done to them. Mr. Lassiter is also a member of the present grand jury. Mr.
Lassiter stated he and his friends had been trying to find outon what grounds
the bills had been found and had ascertained that the evidence that had been
obtained was from what purported to be one of the voting list used in the recent
primary, and on that list were a number of names of parties purporting ti have
voted in Abbeville, that voted at other precincts in the county.These parties
were summoned and swore they had not voted there. He said further that he and
his friends had been denied the privilege of seeing the list claimed to be the
voting list there. He says the present grand jury is composed almost entirely 
of parties favorable to removing the court house from Abbeville to Rochelle, and
that he considers the entire proceedings a political one to beat G. F. McLeod in
his election for representative next Wednesday.
