M. Gibbs W. M. Gibbs a prominent citizen of Pleasant Grove died Monday and was buried Tuesday at Pleasant Grove church with Masonic rites. The attendance was large as he was well known all over the country. Mr. Gibbs had held several offices of honor and trust. He was Ordinary for three terms about thirty years ago. Later he was sheriff of the county for four terms. He leaves several children, one of whom is L. E. Gibbs, who is the presnt [sic] sheriff. He was 72 years old and a Confederate veteran. He was raised in Wilcox county and he had seen it grow from a wilderness to one of the finest farming counties in the state. A Good Soldier Has Gone to Rest Abba, Ga., July 1916. William M. Gibbs was born 12th of May 1843 in Irwin County now Wilcox County, was raised a farmer boy, was a great cattle and sheep driver, his father being a large stock owner. He received a common school education in the schools of the county, he volunteered to go to the civil war March 4th 1862 at Abbeville and was a member of Co. E. 49th Ga. Regt. and was a good soldier, was in sevral [sic] battles beginning with Seven Pines in three of the battles of the Chickahomny around Richmond, the battle of Frasiers Farm, the second battle of Manasas Cender Run and the surrender of Harpers Ferry in 1862, in the battle of Chancellorsville and the Wilderness 1863 there he was wounded and was away from the Company about ninety days in Hospital and on a short furlough home he rejoined his company and was with it continuously until the surrender of Lee on the Appomotax [sic]. He walked home from Virginia in about eighteen days, got home about the first of May 1865, helped his father and brothers to finish the crop and then began to work for himself. Married Nancy Mixon 1867 and to them twelve children were born, ten boys and two girls. He joined Union Church by Baptism and then Pleasant Hill by letter. He was elected Ordinary of Wilcox County in 1881 and made a good record as an officer. Some years afterwards he was elected Sheriff of Wilcox County for three terms in succession, after that he was appointed Notary Public, he was a good servant of the people. He joined the Masons when quite a young man and proved himself worthy of every trust reposed in him by the fraternity. He served Abbeville Lodge as secretary for four years, Junior Warden two years and then Irwinville Lodge three years as Worshipful Master, then a member of Rebecca Lodge when he died. A public servant is gone, a good man has fallen, he passed awao [sic] quietly at his home July 10th, 1916, surrounded by his family and was laid to rest at Pleasant Grove church by a large crowd of friends and relatives.
