GEORGE R. REID OF WILCOX. On Friday night last, at fifteen minutes past midnight, at his home five miles below Abbeville, Wilcox County, Hon. George R. Reid departed this life at the advanced age of seventy-five years, six months and one day. The deceased was a remarkable man in many respects. Possessed of a powerful constitution, and great energy, and endowed with a strong mind, he wasa conspicuous character in any assemblage and under any circumstances. He was born at St. Mary’s, Florida, in 1806, at which period that country blonged to Spain. In 1812 he moved with his parents to Georgia, and settled at Old Hartford, in Pulaski County, where, we believe, we have heard him state that his father was buried. At that time the Indians occupied the whole of the county west of the Ocmulgee. Not a house then stood where Hawkinsville now stands. Mr. Reid leaves a large family. Of his immediate descendants, there are three sons and seven daughters, two of whom, Mrs. James H. Dyches and Mrs. R. O. Holton live in this county. He was often chosen by his fellow citizens to fill positions of honor and trust. At one time he represented Irwin County in the Legislature, and subsequently, the county of Wilcox, which was partly created out of Irwin. He was also Judge of the Inferior Court. During the late war he was captain of a company of militia that assembled at Macon to meet General Sherman’s army on its march to the seacoat.. Mr. Reid was probably the largest sheep and cattle raiser in Southern Georgia, and leaves an estate estimated to be worth forty thousand dollars. Of his many virtues were his love of justice and his incorruptible integrity. He was peaceable, hospitable and kind hearted, and a noble citizen. A rosewood coffin was purchased in Hawkinsville on Saturday, and the burial took place on Sunday at ten o’clock, when the remains were laid by the side of those of his first wife on his old homestead.
