Dr. Cynthia Vold Forde rebjar@direcway.com ==================================================================== BIRTH: FREDERICK 'FADDA' JARRETT was my 6th great grandfather. Fadda was born about 1730 to Nicholas Jarrett II and (possibly) Sarah (Underhill) Briggs in Surry/Sussex County, VA; Frederick was the fourth son. The surname has been spelled in a variety of ways:Gerrard, Jarratt, Garratt, Jarrot, Jarrett. Frederick Jarrett is the name given in the Albemarle Parish Register. See page 74, William Bennett Boddie, 1958, to the fourth generation Jarrett ancestor of this line. It is interesting that there are no descendants named Frederick, yet there several named Thaddeus. Frederick s nickname has been spelled in a variety of ways as well: Fadde, Faddy, Fadda. Fadda had a grandson named Fadda Jarrett Partridge and another grandson, Fadda Sappington ( Thaddeus Sappington), a son of Richard and Rebecca Jarrett Sappington, who appears in Henry County, Carroll County, GA transferring land. MARRIAGE: He was married at least twice: 1.) Martha Ivey (2/1/1734- 3/1790) Marriage: bef. 1754 when he was 24 years old. 2.) Martha Barker (Some researchers note Martha Barker - it would have been prior to 1754 or after 1790 and bef. 1797. 3) Athaliza Carroll Pinkston (d. 1846) Marriage: December 1, 1797- no children born to that union. She was the widow of Shadrack Pinkston. Her grave is marked by the DAR via Shadrack's Rev. War Patriot status. OCCUPATION: Farmer, Planter MILITARY RECOGNITION: Faddy Jarrett received recognition as a Patriot in the Revolutionary War along with his father-in-law, Hugh Ivey: VIRGINIA REVOLUTIONARY PUBLIC CLAIMS IN THREE VOLUMES; compiled and transcribed by Janice L. Abercrombie and Richard Slatten; Iberian Publishing Company, Athens, Georgia; VOLUME III; page 894 " p. 8 Jarratt, Faddy 287# beef." also listed "Jarratt, Henry 350# beef." "p. 9 Jarratt, Nicholas 27 gal. 6 pts, brandy" It would take additional research to identify this Henry and Nicholas, but depending on birth and death dates Nicholas could be father of Frederick. "Ivy, Hugh 185# beef." Volume III; page 899 "p. 4 Jarratt, Faddy a saddle." MIGRATION TO GEORGIA: The Frederick Jarrett family moved to Wilkes County, GA ca. 1783-1785 and settled on Kettle Creek. 'Fadde Jarrod' appeared on the 1785 Wilkes County Tax record; he purchased land 2 June 1786. (source: Claire Sappington Schmidt). In 1785, he is shown as owning 8 slaves and 300 acres. He later bought 400 acres on Kettle Creek as well as other lands. In 1796, he gve power of attorney to his son, Nicholas, to receive his share of Richard Ivey s estate in Sussex County, VA. Richard was Martha Ivey's brother. Nicholas sold his share to John Raines Mason in 1796. PROPERTY NOTES: In December of 1784, Fadda Jarrad, of Sussex County, VA deeded to Richard Cotton 275 acres which was part of a patent to Fadda Jarrett in 1773, joining Peebles' Meadow, John Garey, Frederick Andrews, Robbins's Branch, Black Swamp. This was also signed by his wife, Martha Jarrad. Son of his son, Jesse, was named James Bell Jarrett. " (From Patricia Durham, Savannah, GA) CHILDREN: Fadda and Martha Ivey had quite a few children and almost all are documented in various ways. 'Buzzy' and Carroll Williams, descendants of Jesse Jarrett and Rebeckah Bell, have done a multi-generation pedigree of Jesse's descendants. Patricia Durham of Savannah has also identified children: Sarah b. 10/14/74 d. 11/16/1820 (married to Jesse Partridge) Howell b. 2/11/56 - m. Jane Smiley Coats Elizabeth b. ca. 1760 -d. 11/ 1820 m. Richard and Rebecca were my 5th great grandparents. Mary J. b. ca. 1770 - d? m. James Roan Jane b. 1772 - d. (there is a possibility that a daughter, Jane, existed. She may have been one of the wives of Lewis Barrett who received estate settlement, but was not named as a son-in-law receiving gifts. Daughter Jarrett b. 1775 (died early) m. William Mason Daughter Jarrett b. ? (died early) m. John Holliday (John Holliday was a legatee in the receipts of Fadda's estate, yet there is no other record of John Holliday as a son-in-law.) FADDA'S ESTATE: Fadda Jarrett died intestate. His son-in-law, Richard Sappington, and widow Atha Jarrett were appointed administrators. In 1793, Fadda named three sons-in-law and one son in a transfer of property:: James Roan son-in-law Nicholas Jarrott, son Richard Sappington, son-in-law John Weaver, son-in-law NOTES:**** From Thomas Parsons, a descendant of James Bell Jarratt: "Faddy and his family were definitely Anglican while they were in Sussex. The minister who died was the Rev. William Willie; his successor did not keep records. I want to go back and see Jarratt Manor near Toccoa, Georgia, which was the home of Nicholas Jarratt, and is open to the public as a park. I would imagine that Altha Jarratt would be buried near Faddy's residence. (Athaliza Jarrett was buried next to her first husband, Shadrack Pinkston, and not at Jarratt Manor - the DAR maintains her gravesite; Cynthia Forde) The location of Faddy's farm in Sussex is known--it is near Waverly on the other (eastern) side of the county. He sold part of the farm to his son Jesse, who left it to his son, James Bell Jarratt. James Bell Jarratt moved to the western side of the county, where the Bells were located, and sold Jesse's farm and purchased property near Jarratt where I live. James Bell Jarratt's mother remarried to John Crew Robinson prior to 1785. She was deceased by 1785 and James Bell Jarratt was raised by J. Crew Robinson. I have copies of his guardian papers."
