The grantee, Gilbert Hay, was an influential Doctor of the Town of Washington. Copied at the Wilkes County Courthouse in Washington, Georgia, September 2006, transcribed by Marshall Styles: This Indenture made this 27th day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety one, Between John Colley of the County of Wilkes and State of Georgia of the one part and Gilbert Hay of the Town of Washington and County & State aforesaid of the other part, Witnesseth that the said John Colley for and in consideration of the sum of ten pounds Sterling to him in hand paid by the said Gilbert Hay the receipt whereof the said John Colley doth hereby acknowledge hath granted bargained sold aliened in fee of released and confirmed and by these presents doth grant bargain sell alien in fee of release and confirm unto the said Gilbert Hay his heirs and assigns forever a certain Tract or Parcel of land situate lying and being in the county of Wilkes and State aforesaid, near the Town of Washington adjoining Henry Mounger’s Land Northwardly, Henry Carr’s land Westwardly, Taylor’s lot Southwardly, and the Commons of said Town Eastwardly containing one acre and three quarters more or less with all and singular the rights members and appurtenances thereunto belonging or appertaining to the said Tract or Parcel of Land and premises above mentioned and also all the Estate right title Interest Claim or demand of him the said John Colley his heirs Executors and administrators to him the said Gilbert Hay his heirs and assigns forever. To have and to hold the said Tract or parcel of land and premises above mentioned with their and every of their rights and appurtenances unto the said Gilbert Hay his heirs and assigns to his and their own proper use and behoof.
