Know all men by these presents that We, William Smith, Dudley Stinson, James 
Boatwright & William Gill are held & firmly bound unto his excellency George M 
Troup Governor & Commander in Chief of the Army & Navy of this State & of the 
Militia thereof, in the full sum of twenty thousand dollars to be paid to the 
said George M Troup or his successors in office Governors of the said state 
for the time being for which payment will and truly to be made & done, we bind 
ourselves, our heirs Executors and administrators, and each of every one of 
them, jointly & severally, firmly by these presents Sealed with our Seals, & 
dated the 23rd day of January Eighteen hundred & twenty four. Whereas the 
above bound William Smith was on the fifth day of January Eighteen hundred & 
twenty four elected Sheriff of the County of Wilkes in the said state: Now the 
conditions of the above obligation is such, that if the said William Smith 
shall well & truly do & perform all & singular the duties required of him, in 
virtue of his said office as Sheriff aforesaid according to the Law and the 
trust reposed in him, then the above obligation to be void, otherwise to 
remain in full force & virtue
