Colley On 10 October 1936, Sarah Elizabeth Colley, daughter of John Milton Colley, and the great-great granddaughter of John W. Colley, submitted an Application For Membership To The National Society Of The Daughters Of The American Revolution at Washington, DC, as a lineal descendant of John Colley and Sarah France. Her application, which appears to have been submitted in pencil, rather than in pen, and therefore faded and difficult to read, was accepted on 16 December 1936. McDonald, Chapter Regent Application and duplicate record received by National Society November 30, 1936 Application examined and approved December 4, 1936, Lue Reynolds Spencer Accepted by the National Board of Management December 16, 1936, May Erwin Talmadge, Recording Secretary General Lineage I Sarah Elizabeth Colley being of the age of eighteen years and upwards, hereby apply for membership in the Society by right of lineal descent in the following line from John Colley who was born in Virginia on the 14 day of September 1752 and died in Wilkes County Georgia on the 9 day of June 1815. His place of residence during the Revolution was Virginia, Henry County. I was born in Palestine, County of Anderson, State of Texas. 1. I am the daughter of John Milton Colley, born 12-27-1854, living, and his wife Mary Achsah Hunter, born 6-4-1866, died 12-6-1899, married 7-10-1889. 2. The said John Milton Colley was the child of Francis Colley, born 10-14-1850, died 1-19-1924 and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Staples, born 3-14-1838, died 3-16-1912, married 1853. 3. The said Francis Colley was the child of Spain Colley, born 7-22-1794, died 6-23-1866, and his wife Nancy Talbot, born 1810, died 2-1873(?), married 1-11-1827. 4. The said Spain Colley was the child of John Colley, born 9-14-1752, died 6-9-1815, and his wife Sarah France, born 6-4-1763, died 12-21-1833, married 10-17-1780 Henry County. The said John Colley is the ancestor who assisted in establishing American Independence, while acting in the capacity of Sergeant[crossed out] in Revolutionary Army. Private, VA Troops, Capt. Briscoe’s Company. [Note: Reference above to Captain Briscoe’s Company, was also known as Captain Charles West’s Company, and is more fully identified as the Third Virginia Regiment, which was commissioned under Colonel Thomas Marshall. An officer by the name of Lieutenant James Monroe served in the Third Virginia Regiment from 1776 to 1778 or 1779. In 1816, this same James Monroe was elected President of the United States. John Colley died one year previous to that. - Marshall Styles] My ancestor’s services in assisting in the establishment of American Independence during the War of the Revolution were as follows: The Adjutant General’s Office, War Department records show that John Colley served in the Revolutionary War as a sergeant, organization not shown. His name appears in a receipt dated March 10, 1778 for 7 gallons of molasses for the use of 16 men sick in their barracks. John Colley’s name also appears without rank or organization in a receipt dated Savannah Georgia March 1, 1778 for candles for the use of some sick men in their barracks, Captain Smith’s Company. The Virginia State Library records show the reference to John Colley on the payroll of Capt. Brisco Company of Militia on the expedition under General Clark against the Shawnees, 1780. Colley is the son of Edward Colley, Jr. and wife Mary Strong from Norfolk County, VA. John was born in Norfolk County, Virginia, and was raised in Mecklenburg County, Virginia near present-day Chase City. After the Revolutionary War, John W. Colley settled in Wilkes County, Georgia, where he raised his own family. His Wilkes County descendants include, among others, Barksdale, Sims, Robert, Roberts, Thomas, Binns, Fanning, Gardner, DeVaughn, Latimer, Reynolds, Green, Perteet, Brown.
