At residence in Washington, Wilkes County, Georgia, Mr. Francis Coley, in the 78th year of his age. The deceased was a consistent member of the Baptist Church. Born in Virginia and a solider in the war of 1812. A few days before his death, being visited by his sons, he remarked he was ‘afraid the Yankees would fool them,’ implying he would rather they were back at their post, than around his dying bed. Though his disease was dropsy of the heart, he died without a struggle. Thus departed one of the meekest, humblest, and most unostentatious men I ever knew, without a spot or blemish upon his character. ‘Blessed are the dead who died in the Lord.’ {signed} R. ~~~~~ Additional Comments: Francis Colley was the son of John W. Colley and Sarah France Colley of Wilkes County. A transcription of the obituary was contributed by Ellen Peniston Rafeedie, December 2007, from "The Cedars" collection.
