Colley Dies Here Colonel Archibald Toombs Colley died early Sunday morning at his home on Robert Toombs Avenue, as the result of a heart attack. News of his sudden death, after several hours illness, cast a pall of sadness over this community, and in all parts of the state, where he was known and loved. A West Point graduate, Col. Colley served with distinction in World War I with the 28th Division in France. He participated in engagements in the Verdun, Belleau Wood, Chateau Thierry, Soissons, Marback, Nancy and St. Mihiel sectors. At the close of the war he was assigned to the Port of New York. Later he returned to Georgia as head of personnel in the Fourth Corps area. In 1941 he was appointed head of selective service in Georgia, later retiring for reasons of health. For several years he served as commandant at the University of Georgia. Col. Colley was a graduate of the University of Georgia, and member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He was a trustee of Mary Willis Library and a member of the Mediator (Episcopal) in Washington. He was the son of the late Frank H. and Kate Toombs Colley. His wife was the late Madeline Burgess of Burlington, VT. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. J.K. Brown, of Paris, France, and Mrs. John C. Reiber, of Marietta; two grandchildren, Kathleen and John Reiber of Marietta; one brother, Carroll D. Colley, and two sisters, Mrs. Kenneth Boyd and Miss Kathleen Colley, all of Washington. Funeral services were held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, at the Church of the Mediator, with the Rev. Robert E. Burgeen officiating, and burial was in the Toombs family lot at Resthaven cemetery. Active pallbearers were Edward Pope, William Pope, J.M. Griggs, Wilbur Orr, Marshall Reynolds, Alexander Wright, and Osborne Bounds, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Frank Mauncy, the Hon. Ben W. Fortson, A.H. Barnett, C.E. Sutton, C.H. Orr, Osborne Bounds, C.C. Granade, George T. Armstrong, Henry Ogletree, Frank Thomas and Jack Burdette.” Additional Comments: Archibald Toombs Colley married Helen Madeline Burgess about 1910 in Chittenden County, Vermont. Daughter Mrs. J.K. Brown is Kathleen Colley who later married Paul Turner Goldsmith of Atlanta. Mrs. John C. Reiber is daughter Helen Burgess Colley. Mrs. Kenneth Boyd is sister Marion Toombs Colley.
