Clifton Barrett, and Rev. Thomas Epps and Rev. Dale Nielson officiating. He died Monday, April 16, in Athens General Hospital. A native of Wilkes County, Mr. Fanning was the son of the late Reuben Fanning and the late Roselyn Armour Fanning. He was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church and was a retired welder. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Eloise Louise Combs Fanning; a daughter, Mrs. Leon Hopkins of Washington; two sons, Malcolm Fanning and Ricky Fanning of Washington; three sisters, Mrs. Mamie F. Maxwell of Washington, Mrs. Virginia Kennedy Hammock of Rayle and Mrs. Flora Meadows of Union Point; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Pallbearers included Troy Brown, Tim Brown, Jack Maxwell, Thomas Fanning, Kenneth Poss and Robert Echols. Hopkins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Additional Comments: Reuben Weyland Fanning was a great grandson of Welcome Fanning and Louisa Colley of Wilkes County. Welcome Fanning was the boyhood educator of Robert Toombs -- former US Senator, Confederate Secretary of State, Confederate General.
