"The death of Mrs. Julia Toombs Hardeman, wife of Judge S.H. Hardeman, which 
occurred on Monday in Washington, will be a source of sorrow and regret to 
many friends throughout this and other southern states. Her illness was a 
short one. Long years ago Mrs. Hardeman lost her daughter, Mary Toombs 
Hardeman, a beautiful and gifted girl and the idol of the mother's heart. 
Since that time her life has been shadowed by this irrevocable sorrow and the 
release of her spirit from its mortal bonds must have been welcomed by her. 
Mrs. Hardeman was a woman in the prime of life. As Miss Julia Toombs she was 
in her girlhood marvelously beautiful and her loveliness withstood the illness 
and heart anguish brought to her by the relentless years.

Her face, with its dark sorrowful eyes and pathetic mouth, was that of 
a 'mater Dolrosa.' She was a rarely gifted and charming woman, graced, 
magnetic and cultured. A beautiful voice was perhaps her greatest gift, but 
coupled with that were the other charms of refined breeding and artistic 
sensibilities. In dress, manner and inn all the lovely appointments of her 
home, she carried out the highest ideal of an exquisite lady. She was a woman 
who attracted and charmed all who met her. Mrs. Hardeman was the second 
daughter of Mr. Gabriel Toombs, of Washington, and the niece of the late 
General Robert Toombs. The deepest pity and sympathy goes out to the husband 
and son whom her death has left desolate.


Additional Comments:
Julia Toombs Hardeman was a sister of Katherine (Kate) Toombs who married 
Frank Harris Colley of Wilkes County.
