The Atlanta Constitution 5 Sept 1891
Washington, Ga., September 4. [Special]-The private car bearing the coffin of 
Miss Mary Toombs Hardeman, with her father and mother and other friends, 
reached this place on Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock.  It was met by friends 
here in carriages and taken to the Methodist church.  Friends had filled the 
church with the most beautiful flowers, which are growing here now in the 
greatest profusion.  The gardens of friends furnished them and loving hands 
arranged them.  The coffin was covered with pure white. 

The burial service was read by Dr. Bradley, of the Methodist church.  Dr. 
Bradley had himself once suffered the loss of a child-a son who had just 
reached promising manhood.  This gave a deeper feeling to his prayer, which 
made a profound impression on the large assemblage.  The hymns selcted were 
the young lady's favorite hymns.  The death has plunged Washington into grief, 
and there was hardly a dry eye.  One of the most affecting sights was that of 
Miss Hardeman's old grandfather, Mr. Gabriel Toombs who never expected to 
follow her to the grave. 

She was laid to rest among her kindred in the cemetery where her grandmother, 
Mrs. Mary Toombs, for whom she was named, has rested for many years.  The 
grave was lined with beautiful flowers and the coffin rested on a  bed of 
roses.  Roses were heaped on the finished grave.  Everybody wanted to do 
something, and to bring flowers was all that could be done.  The offerings 
were very numerous.
