SMITH IS DEAD - RAILROAD PROMOTER AND EDITOR HAS PASSED AWAY. Washington, Ga., March 27 - The death of Charlie E. Smith, president of the Washington and Elberton Construction Company, and leading promoter of the Washington and Elberton railroad, occurred last night in this city. He was 68 years of age and has been identified with Washington's business interests since the war. He was for many years owner and editor of The Washington Chronicle and until the beginning of the present year held the office of commissioner of roads and revenue of Wilkes county. He is survived by a wife and two daughters, Mrs. M. R. Moore of this county, and Mrs. Sidney Kendrick of Hartwell. The interment occurred this afternoon in the city cemetery.
